Both are supernatural/fantasy (WE more so) stories that examine the obsession of a teenage/young adultish main character's love for a deceased one as it transfers to a "heir," the one who will resurrect the dead person's image. Lament of the Lamb provides a more detailed picture of immediate life for the characters if, upon realizing what's happening, the "replacement" character accepts his role; World Embryo kind of goes the negative direction, and has a more involved look at the consequences of the action (as necessitated by the plot; WE is more of a save the world type story) in terms of regret and the uniqueness of identity. Both examine isolation and secrecy, though while in Lament of the Lamb many are aware that at least something is being kept secret, that's not quite the case in WE (knowledge restricted more to two main characters); WE is also a bit more easier relate to, as it is much more philosophical and pulls you into Riku's mind as he questions the manipulations around him and his own motivations. Finally, both have a bit of a love triangle, and a bit of a forbidden romance feel (it's a little bit harder to explain in WE-fantasy element of it).
