As a person who played volleyball growing up, this series immediately caught my eye when i first got into anime. Although there are many cliche moments where the characters seem to analyze the whole game, their opponents, and recall a memory of childhood in a split second in order to make a decision about a play, that is what makes this a great sports anime. This series seriously elevates the fast-pace game of volleyball into a game of deep thinking -although unrealistic to real life - as well as develops themes of teamwork and friendship.
Now, aside from the topic of the actual sports
...
part of this anime, the characters in this anime are probably the best part of this show. Every single character has a unique personality internal struggle. The creators of this story nailed characterization of the boys on the head. The new characters constantly introduced from other teams make this show enjoyable and fun to watch. Many of the characters have quirks about them and flamboyant personalities that either crash or compliment with the other characters, creating ironic, hilarious, and dramatic scenarios. Even the characters that the series implies as the antagonists are as lovable as the main characters. The friendships built between unlikely duos mirror many true to life situations in which the people who are least expected to have a good relationship end up becoming the best of friends. The beauty of this anime is that these relationships allow the characters to overcome their personal differences and internal struggles in order to achieve a common goal and not only become better at the sport they are passionate about, but also become better as a person.
