Bocchi the Rock! A brilliant show that portrays social anxiety extremely well through the main character Bocchi, with some brilliant music to boot.
The story telling in this anime is just phenomenal, it is very easy to follow, and the pacing is just perfect, no filler episodes here to speak of. The cliffhangers in this show aren't too sudden, but they are also very effective in making you want to come back and watch the next episode, usually they would end it just before an important event they have been building up to happens.
The story itself comes to a natural end on the final episode, it
...
doesn't feel forced or rushed, and it is a very satisfying ending as it really shows how far the characters have come since the beginning of the show.
The art is just beautiful, CloverWorks did an excellent job here at providing a very good viewing experience and the quality remained consistent throughout. There was also some scenes where some live action clips were added for comedic effect, those were also done very well and they fit the flow of the show.
The characters are designed really well, the choice of different bright hair colours and varying hair styles makes the characters unique and recognizable. Bocchi in particular is very memorable and her character is designed to be relatable to anyone with social anxiety, whereas Kita is the complete opposite, a very extroverted character on the complete opposite side of the scale to Bocchi.
All of the characters were very well balanced, and were not out of the realm of what would be realistically possible in real life, this made the characters all the more relatable. Each of the characters had a purpose in the show, none of them felt like they were there just for the sake of having another character. The character development was done very well too, the main characters came a long way, particularly Bocchi. She certainly had ups and downs throughout the show, and in fact regressed somewhat towards the end, but given the nature of anxiety, it makes total sense and it was done well.
The music in this show just blew away any expectations I had, even for a show with such a high overall rating, it fits perfectly into the show and the lyrics are about the characters themselves. I have listened to a good number of these songs since finishing the anime, they are just that good. It made many of the scenes in this show way more memorable.
The sound effects were brilliant, they just fit in at the right moments, and the voice actors fit their roles perfectly, couldn't imagine the characters in this show with different voice actors.
I wholeheartedly recommend Bocchi the Rock! to hardcore anime fans and people who are completely new to anime. As someone who has social anxiety, this anime shows it in a funny and interesting way, and a way that I believe non anxiety sufferers will be able to understand without having experienced it themselves.
