Pt 1:

So Gen Urobuchi came back to anime for a YouTube anime and it's one of the laziest things I've seen from a show this year. Maybe that's why he named it "Obsolete".

What if in Kado, Aldnoah Zero or the netflix godzilla, the aliens just dropped off Knightmares for some MGS4 PMCs and war refugees from Jormungand, FMP or the Psycho Pass movie to run through half rendered Expelled from Paradise fights with an 08th MS Team theme? All while preaching about the profit of war in a way that feels like both an anti-war PSA and a recruitment video?

Forget characters. Forget story. Just straight-up ... contradictory preaching amidst poorly put together CG mech fights with uninspired designs and tactics. What a mess. The laziest thing Gen Urobuchi has ever written, blatantly ripping off himself and others without putting any work into developing the ideas he's throwing around. Also it looks like shit.

Pt 2:

Ep 10 was an ok "jump the border" story, Ep 11 had some underwater lighting, and Ep 12 just abandons the whole show to go full anime. Overall, more enjoyable than the 1st half.

According to the author note, this was never planned to be a comic. This was a series of drawings they strung together afterwards with narration to resemble a character study. They didn’t know what was drawn. Just that it was sad.

No wonder, because despite decent standalone pictures it DOES NOT translate well to graphic novel storytelling. All we get is a series of semi-photorealistic portraits with repetitive angsty narration. No character arcs are ever explored. It’s just one wreck of a lost girl in a world of constantly blurry pictures screaming. Quite frankly, this was one of the whiniest comics I’ve read and I regret ... paying to read this. Selling my copy as soon as possible.

There's 3 hurdles you have to pass to enjoy the Code Geass movie:

1. Swallow the "shirley lives" retcon from the recap movies with little justification in this movie.
2. Be ok with a version of the driver theory.
3. Be prepared for more World of C wackiness with no explanation.

If you manage to pass all 3, you'll have a good time. Make no mistake: this is Code Geass fanfiction, but it's the good kind. The one that accepts everything good and bad about the show and gives most fans what they wanted but never got in the show. Teamups, reunions, action, etc.

Is there a lot of ... dumb stuff done to bring us to this point after such a conclusive ending? Hell yes, but it's what they do with it rather than how they get there that works. At the very least, it doesn't break the impact of the ending as much as give one character a 2nd chance.

P.S. Also my ship is canon now. I would've been fine with anyone since CG ended with no endship, but they picked the one I rooted for. And considering this movie's existence is literally fanservice, I appreciate that.
