Now I know there are plenty of people who hate SAO, and being someone who personally is lukewarm on the series as a whole can understand that. In previous seasons SAO has taken the opportunity to give fans the middle finger during the last third of the first season and hinge the first part of the second season on a MacGuffin that even the worlds worst detective should have figured out. This season however, has no real FU moment in it. Is the plot contrived? Yes it is; are emotional character moments somewhat schmaltzy? Yes they are. But if you like stories that lean towards

I decided to go in for a second viewing of the first season of Chu-2 after listening to some grumblings about how it was not that good. So, my impression of the season before was as following:
'"Growing up doesn't mean packing up all the things you enjoy in your youth, but in learning moderation and compromise.' Unfortunately that was not the message that this anime decided to go with. Instead it was an anime about a bunch of adults dumping their family problems on a first year high school boy's shoulders and him making a child decision at the end of the season; which clashes ... Overall, I can say I enjoyed these extra episodes for their novelty and because I fell in love with the concept of Suzumiya universe. It takes a special formula to make me forgive boredom, and the endless eight has it in there. I would normally say that making your viewer purposefully bored is just a gimmick, and a really poor replacement for good storytelling, but I felt it brings to the forefront the overall aesthetic of the series; that you cannot take what the characters say as truths. You have to figure out what the universe is really like through your own observations.
