I never thought I'd watch an anime where I am utterly confused by what was going on. But in a bad way, not in a way that I got intrigued and wanting to know more what happened.
I'm an amateur at reviewing anime myself, so I am not sure what actually went wrong with this very pretty looking movie, but here are my two-cents.
Story - 5
It's... there, to say the least. At worst, it's so scattered and confused that I don't know what we are supposed to focus on.
The story lacks structure, there wasn't really any moment of climax throughout the whole story; everything just happens,
...
one thing from another.
Add in to the already confusing story, there is a mystical element that involves time travelling and alternate universes.
I don't know what is to blame here, but I'd chalk it up to pretty bad directing and storyboard.
Despite its shortcomings, I kind of like the idea that it's trying to pull off, which is why I'm giving it a 5.
Art - 6
The art is really pretty, not gonna lie. If you have seen the MV for Uchiage Hanabi, then the art is pretty much that.
However, once again, due to lack of direction, it's just that, pretty art, and nothing more.
Sound - 6
The choice of soundtrack is... okay. It's not bad. And the songs that were in the movie itself are pretty good too. But again, the lack of idea or direction really drags down the whole thing.
Character - 3
Ah, where to begin with. Simply put, they are less people, more like characters that act out certain behaviours in order to get the plot moving forward. It's really sad. I honestly really liked the character design, especially of Nazuna (the main character).
And at some points, the casts' acting was just so cheesy I could barely hold myself. The lines that they deliver not only feel unnatural, they feel very forced.
But then, everything just seems so confused that there was little to no time for the characters to actually develop or show any meaningful character traits.
Enjoyment - 4
I was glad I was watching with friends. This entire ride would have been torture if I had watched it alone. At least with friends I can express my confusion and confirm that I am not going out of my mind for not understanding the bulk of the movie.
Overall - 3
Yeah, in the end I'd give it a 3. Really beautiful movie, very interesting idea but very VERY scattered and no sense of direction or focus throughout the whole story. At the very least it's an interesting viewing experience. But boy oh boy was it a wild ride. And in a different sense!
