There's something quite special about this show, and the most obvious manifestation of this is the severity of the reaction that people have to it and the main character. It is in this sense that it is a masterpiece, rather than the perfection of its construction. Obviously reaction alone can't be considered a sufficient yardstick, rather it's the fact it stems from very genuine and human truth.
Watching this show is intensely uncomfortable for many people, with countless comments about how people are unable to sit through an episode without pausing it multiple times. Yet these same viewers come back time and time again. To be

able to achieve this simply through the choices, actions and inner monologue of a single character is quite the feat, and should clue you into the fact that there is much, much more going on behind the scenes here.
Superficially, there is a lot to hate or call the show mediocre for, with its use of contrivances and cliches lifted straight from the stereotype for the genre. Yet like many other good works of anime it takes these as its starting points.
What really elevates its the level of masterpiece though, is that at its very heart, the thing that keeps people pushing through it despite the cringe, are some powerful truths about the nature of human connection, the way it forms, how flawed people crash their way through life, and the true dimensions of the struggles of the weak.
Watching can be a gruelling experience for some, but I feel like it's those viewers who will ultimately get the most out of this show, once the haze of cringe slowly evaporates.
