Attack on Titan is a tragedy from start to finish. Don't expect the typical shounen happy victories with no sacrifices of main characters or their loved ones.
Story - 10/10
The story is intricate, complex and even after completing the manga you'll have to reread it a few times in order to get answers to all the subtle inferences that happen through all of the events. The author gives you the tools to figure out everything but does not hold your hand and provide you answers from the get-go. The author provides hints throughout the whole story that secondary events are happening but you won't be able
...
to understand them on your first reading. When the grand revelations start the author completely flips the meaning of events from the past 2 or 3 times in just a few chapters. It is definitely a thought-stimulating story
Art - 5/10
The author basically couldn't draw at all at the start of the manga. He even made spin-offs early on when the manga started gaining popularity and the look even worse. But as the years pass and the manga popularity soared, his art style greatly improved. So if you can survive the horrible art style of the early chapters you'll be able to revel in the art style of later chapters
Character - 10/10
Pretty much most of the main cast go trough a proper character development. The main protagonist goes through the biggest character development and both progresses and stays the same person just like humans do in real life. The main cast has many people with outstanding individual personalities so you'll definitely find at least one to become your favorite (and due to all the plot twists you'll probably hate him/her at least for a while at some point {I hated all of the main characters except one little shorty for about 10-20 chapters} . And finally the story spans throughout the years so you'll see the characters mature not only mentally but physically as well
Enjoyment - 10/10
Despite the subtleties that are revealed by the end, the plot makes a coherent whole which is enjoyable even while you don't understand everything. There are many emotional scenes and moments that resonate with the reader. There are plenty of both petty scuffles and large scale battles; a few slice of life moments; a lot of mysteries and tension; a few love stories (some tragic, some happy); tons of exciting and thrilling moments and so on. You're basically in for one hell of a joyride with this manga.
Overall - 10/10
The series delves into a lot of issues as it can be pretty much split into 3 segments - slice of life (the characters in their daily routine), battle (whether between people or between titans and people) and political (there are lots of conspiracies and political moves and decisions). From the start to the end the series focuses on problems in both past and modern human society. The story is actually extremely focus on politics and calculated moves while the human drama and the battle of the titans serve as surface-level diversions for those who don't bother to think and analyze what is actually happening. Seriously, if you expected just another shounen superhero manga, don't pick this up. Plenty of people complain about the ending because they either can't see the full picture of everything that has ensued (i.e. they only read it chapter for chapter and don't remember what happened in the previous ones) or are people who can't cope with a series ending as a tragedy instead of getting a happy ending. So if you're planning on trying this manga make sure it's for you and don't just do it because it's popular
For me personally, the author delivered everything that was expected from him and even more. It is a well-thought-out series with a powerful and emotional story. He gradually redeems himself for the initial art, inspired by the art style from the anime. The manga is full of thought-provoking and inspiring moments
