Some plot points are extremely similar (which I will not spoil here, as they take place further on into the plots of both shows). I'll only say that both animes eventually center on heroes, how societies create such distinctions, and how heroes can be made villains from one moment to the next, depending on whose purposes they serve, and if they are politically palatable to those with the most power.

These shows are actually pretty similar. Both are centred around twins (of a sense in one, and literally in the other), have mysterious settings, where the main characters don't know who to trust and seem to have never learned anything about how to act within their societies. They very much differ in content (one somewhat absurdist, while the other supernatural), but I think, if you like one of these titles, you have a high probability of liking the other. MD might take a few episodes to get into, and the same goes for SH, but give them time, they may surprise you.
