Plastic Memories remains one of my favorite anime to this day despite the fact I think it was lacking in many ways.
This futuristic story stars an 18-year old boy Tsukasa Mizugaki. Basically, he decides to go into the work force after failing his college entrance exams and through family connections lands a job at Sion Artificial Intelligence Corporation. This is the company responsible for the manufacture, distribution, and critically reclamation of human-like beings known as Giftia. As a member of Terminal Service One, Tsukasa and his coworkers are one of the groups responsible for retrieving Giftia before they run out of memory space (and allegedly
...
go berserk, killing people with their superhuman strength). Why this happens isn't fully explained but it's the future so whatever.
Now Tsukasa Mizugaki must become a grim reaper of sorts while learning about love, loss, and acceptance in this Slice-of-Life about him and his partner.
Quality - 9
The art in this anime was hands down one of the best I've seen. Like seriously. The use of color and light, the characters' expressions, even the angles used were all top notch. The characters themselves, on the other hand, are one of the great weaknesses of this anime. As if in an effort to keep up with Romantic Comedy norms, more than 50% of the characters are oblivious of their surroundings and make mistakes that seem unacceptable for people their age, especially considering they're at work. Beyond that, most of the character problems could be fixed with more in-depth backstories and more scenes in general, but this leaves characters seeming especially bland and almost recycled. On a brighter note, I loved the music and the story was pretty well-written.
Likability - 10
I somehow found myself incredibly attached to these characters despite or maybe even because of their blandness. I liked how the first few episodes in particular seemed to have their own arcs, and cute bittersweet stories. I find series in general that question morals, death, and individuality to be interesting in their own rights, but this story cleverly skirts those types of dark topics and puts you in the mind of a teenage boy at his first job. He's worried about the impressions he leaves, the quality of his work, how people get along with him, etc. I feel this was a smart way to share the emotions of a dark story without getting into the smaller details or looking at the big picture. There are moments and emotions in this anime that left a deep impression on me and I feel it told the story it wanted to tell.
Recommendability - 9
This has a lot of depressing moments, very little action, weak characters, and some plot holes.
Everything else was beautiful. It properly constructed its own world and sat me down inside it to have me watch an ordinary boy at a somewhat ordinary job. It had me grinning, thinking, tearing up...all practically on command. It does what SoL greats like K-On couldn't for me through the use of emotion, color, and actual plot. If you can handle a tearjerker, I recommend this 100%.

In case you missed it, Grisaia no Kajitsu is rated R+ for Mild Nudity. Just so we're on the same page here.
Grisaia no Kajitsu is one of a wave of anime based on popular Visual Novels of its time. As I haven't yet tried the VN, this review is based solely on the anime, and not some pre-existing expectations like the majority I've seen here.
Also, this will be a review on the full series, but I'll avoid major spoilers.
The story starts with the interrogation of a suspicious individual who claims he was on his way to school. However, Yuuji Kazami isn't a typical high school
...
boy. He not only seems incredibly mature and calm for a student, but is also beyond typical high school age. As the story continues, it becomes apparent that not only is Yuuji far from normal, but so is his entire school.
Could Yuuji be the solution to this broken everyday life?
Quality - 7
Beautiful Art, a deep, interesting Story, and acceptable Sound...so why such a mediocre score for Quality? Well, my main problem with the story was honestly the pacing. It may seem like a trivial matter, but when huge portions of what seem like fillers are skipped, it changes character dynamics quite a bit. Keep in mind that even without familiarity with the source material I was able to distinguish that the plot was rushed, and you should be able to see why fans of the VN were so upset by this project. Each arc blends into the next, though not seamlessly at all. It felt like I was watching movie after movie rather than a single story. To top it off, because they sacrificed character development to rush the plot, it's not great for rewatching. All this negativity didn't detract from a few beautiful moments, but did make the characters seem superficial or fake.
Likability - 9
Despite some aforementioned issues, this is a truly cool story. I love the main character and the action scenes were almost all amazing. While it did remind me a lot of a VN, it wasn't in a negative way like usual. there was clear progression and while it did feel almost like watching a game walkthrough (with how effortlessly the MC handled each situation) it had good funny, dark, and happy moments exactly how it should have. I thought each arc could practically have been a standalone anime, which meant for me that a lot of enjoyment came from a relatively short viewing time. Pacing is again the enemy of Likability, but I already covered that so let's continue.
Recommendability - 6
Not only does this have the usual Harem and Ecchi tags, but it also contains Nudity AND has some really dark/depressing parts. Despite all of this, I feel that anyone who likes action-y stories and/or is willing to watch an anime for a kickass MC is within the target group of this anime. To be frank, it doesn't get "better" as it goes, so if it doesn't catch your interest it's fine to give up. Though by the same reasoning, why aren't you just watching the first episode right now? This is your official recommendation from me: Just give it a try. You might be surprised.

As one of the most recognized anime of all time, Death Note is in my opinion one of the most agreeable anime ever.
The basic plot is as follows:
Light Yagami, an academically outstanding High School student, is bored with life and finds faults in society while going about his daily life. By chance, he discovers a notebook that was dropped in the schoolyard titled Death Note. According to the included instructions inside the notebook, the notebook gives those who use it the power to kill people by writing their name inside while picturing their face.
After some preliminary testing, Light decides that not only does the
...
notebook work, but it could be the solution to the broken world he lives in. By ridding the world of crime, Light intends to create a new world in which people coexist peacefully and productively.
Quality - 9
With amazing art (8/10), sound (9/10), and story (9/10); Death Note is a quality show. Notably, both the Japanese and English voice actors/actresses are amazing fits for their roles, and the depth of the story will leave even the most dedicated viewers surprised at times. The story itself deals with morals about right versus wrong, brings to question the societal norms we have grown accustomed to, and shows human nature at its best and worst. This is likely why Death Note is considered the Most Popular Anime.
Likability - 10
This anime is hard to hate. Many people criticize the second half as being repetitive, boring, or a ripoff of the beginning, and while I agree the quality was noticeably lower in terms of plot, by that time I was already hooked, and found myself thankful for further resolution, quality aside. Light's character is designed to be easy to connect with, since the feelings he experiences are meant to represent the majority opinions, and the main characters are honestly unforgettable. The fantasy themes were blended effectively in the modern setting, the actions and reactions always seemed justified, and when all was said and done, I was left without confusion.
Recommendability - 10
Okay, so I've mentioned that I think Death Note is agreeable, and this is a good place to touch on why that is. Most anime that people like need to have an appropriate balance of plot, humor, action, mystery, and character development (be it Naruto, One Punch Man, or Fullmetal Alchemist). Death Note keeps what should honestly be a dark, depressing anime light through the use of side characters and subplots. The fact that so many scenes and quotes are well known makes it a must-see for those newer to anime, but the freshness of the characters and unique layered plot make it a good choice for anyone interested in the psychological genre.
