As someone who adored the first season, and was excited to see the continuation, I feel...so confused.
We're thrown right in where the last season left off, now in a meeting with the Queen and the other Heroes as a new big bad surfaces; The Spirit Tortoise. The first couple episodes have a few twists and turns with this plot line that feel...cheap. First there's the familiar who is revealed as not who says she is at least twice. Ost is but one of the new characters crammed into the limelight the bloated cast is forced to share in too short of a run time.

with the Spirit Tortoise, the gang has to defeat it. Fine, sure. First it's cutting off the head, then it's destroying the heart, then it's both those things at the same time whilst destroying the core too that the real villain is controlling and I am tired. Turns out, Ost is actually the Tortoise itself and if they had just killed her the whole thing would have been cut down massively and now I'm pissed. Especially as each escalation has Ost in a fake out death and I just want her to die, I don't care.
She eventually does, gifting Naofumi a shield that is the direct opposite of the Wrath Shield. Nice, cool. The big bad then goes into a portal and escapes into the world he came from - the same world Glass and co came from too.
The gang follows, all returning to Lv 1 as Filo gets separated, lands in this dimensional prison where they meet another Hero - the Hunting Hero. She's actually the only new character I like but she also annoyed me in the bonus episode - ep 13, which was a bit of a slap in the face given how I felt the pacing of the season was rushed overall and the original cast I'm invested in didn't have screen time they deserve.
Glass and co also felt very strange to me given the shift between how they were in season 1 and this season - especially Glass.
Naofumi and Raphtalia I continue to ship though I feel their relationship growth has stagnated. Given how close they got last time, and the potential kiss in the last ep of season 1, I am frustrated that Naofumi is still ignorant of Raphtalia's feelings. Filo is adorable and I like the little moments she had with Naofumi post rescue.
The other Three Heroes I feel I given nothing to do. They walk out of the meeting in episode one, we don't see them till we breach the Tortoise's core and see they are being used as a power source. They're liberated, don't join the fight, don't come with to the other world, and don't ever interact.
The new cast is not interesting enough to be worth all the screen time they are stealing from the original cast. The bonus episode has a focus on story telling for the Hunting Hero's time in the prison and a journey for Naofumi as they lay flowers for Ost.
Ost did NOT make enough of an impact to be given such significance! Her death is being m i l k e d and I'm sooo over it.
I've no idea where the story will go, what the next season has in store, but I seriously hope shit gets sorted in the writing and directing department. Focus needs to return to the characters people are already invested in and the growth better stick. No more cluttering up the screen with characters we have just met.
