Blood, gore, and an overwhelming sense of fascination at the amount of blood one anime can have. There technically isn't much else they share in common but both are really engaging and action packed (sort of).

If you liked Serial Experiments Lain add

...then you might like Boogiepop wa Warawanai add

It seems that Lain and Boogiepop share the same gothic approach to their respective views of the world. I like how both make you really think about their true meanings and how deep they really are.

If you liked Elfen Lied add

...then you might like 3x3 Eyes add

All I have to say is that Yakumo and Nana take serious abuse! If you can handle the large amounts of blood and gore and the occasional down time filled with slice-of-life drama, then Elfen Lied will do you just fine.

If you liked Koukyoushihen Eureka Seven add

...then you might like Kidou Senshi Gundam I add

Well the main characters are young and both love similar things which lead them on a grand adventure. Hey mecha anime is cool anyway and both have really good stories and Eureka 7 has some great music in it! Oh and Eureka 7 boasts very nicely designed mecha just like Gundam!

If you liked Giniro no Kami no Agito add

...then you might like Palme no Ki add

i really enjoy the nature theme of these movies. they all have engaging stories and dynamic characters. these movies great sub-genre all their own.

If you liked Palme no Ki add

...then you might like Green Legend Ran add

this might seem as a stretch to some but I feel that both have a ery solid and truthful meaning at their "roots" if you must. the only thing that I see that is really different is the roles that the main characters in each play in the plot.
