Is Spy x Family really just a lighthearted comedy anime, or is it possibly way more interesting than that?
The answer is yes, it's way more psychological than what you'd initially think! The story progresses from the POV of Anya Forger, whom we know from s.1 has psychic powers that she tries her best to hide them from her found family. (Yor Forger the assassin, and Loid Forger the spy) She continuously tries helping Loid with his mission and sometimes her plans don't go the way she planned, since she's a dumb fuck. (like kids usually are) All of this may seem wholesome, lighthearted, and comedy-packed
...
at first- but all of this is just from Anya's perspective; a 4-5 year old toddler's POV to be exact, so the events are shown as cute and comedic, while in reality this plot is way deeper than that.
Firstly, we know Loid has lost all of his loved ones in the past, and that he has "no identity" as a spy- and this fake family he built is just one souvenir (like the ops name) for yet another one of his countless missions. He can't settle with this wholesome life with Anya and Yor, and once the mission is over- he has no use for them. This show has made it very clear that neither Loid nor Yor have feelings for each other- Loid is almost self-explanatory with his fake personality, and Yor just enjoys having a family life after so long of settling on living alone. She gets flustered and shy at the romantic gestures Loid often gives, but as a psychological writer- I'm sure she doesn't have any genuine feelings for him; She's just not used to being treated with care like this, since her parents weren't around and she was the one to do all the work for herself and her brother. We also see snippets of Loid's past in the openings and endings of both seasons, and it's not so happy-go-lucky as it could be perceived from the comedy aspects of the show alone. Yor and Loid both can feel refreshed by the family play, but they know it won't last for long. Anya- aside from being able to read Loid's mind, isn't as clever to realize that she's just a chess piece for Loid. Loid seems to genuinely enjoy the time with Anya, but it's just temporary, with no thoughts of it lasting forever.
So, what information do we get from my sloppy review?
- there is a 90% chance that the ending won't be as lighthearted as we'd think
- the story is from Anya's POV, which makes it more comedic and cute than it actually is
- yor and loid don't have genuine romantic feelings for each other, they have an acquaintance-relationship
