Old but gold. Along with its sequel "Shin (New) happy people" is undoubtedly an all time classic. Each volume consists of several shorter works and can be viewed independently.

Titled "Happy People", yet paradoxically the collection of short stories revolves around darker themes like greed, lust, sloth and deceit. Human evil and social injustice vividly displayed in ink form, in a somewhat frightening fashion. Perhaps happiness is zero-sum after all, one's fortune is destined to come from another's misfortune.

Art is top-notch. Some panels are terrifyingly refined to the extent that gives you the chills.

Time passes as this gem continues to age like fine wine.

I first came across this work about a year and a half ago and halfway through I already thought this might be the one of the best mangas ever written. In an era flooded with Isekai, the setting of this work is simply a breath of fresh air. Despite spanning only 32 chapters, the flow never felt rushed and the depiction of characters were nothing less than masterful.

The ability to create suspense is exceptional in this work and few can rival it in this aspect, especially at this length. I truly believe this is one of those hidden gems that come few and far ...
