April fools must have come early because the latter part of this show was a joke. It is such a shame as the show had stellar visuals and very good sound design albeit the opening and ending themes were not my cup of tea.
The reason I disliked this show is because I think it tried to be something groundbreaking, and it does this by combining a lot of different elements that ranged from character drama, survival horror, mystery and science fiction. Individually, I thought that the execution of some of its elements were really good. Take for example, the character drama which was the main
...
selling point of the show for the first half. It focused on these girls that were each struggling to cope with their own personal demons that ranged from being isolated from society due to looking different; the inability to trust others; abandonment issues; and struggling to find your own identity.
However, when the show expanded on this drama and slowly revealed the inner workings of the mystery and world they were fighting in and the people they were attempting to save, it just felt really flat and uninteresting. Without spoiling too much details, it felt really rushed, and I’m not surprised given that they just decided to condense all the explanations into the penultimate episode. After the “reveal”, the sequence of events leading up to the major conflict of the story was riddled with plots holes such as characters not dying because it was just convenient for them not to for the sake of the story. I also hated how the supposedly “final” episode never really explained much and never really connected with the penultimate episode in an attempt to tie the already very loose nots of the story. Instead, they introduced another concept that although was foreshadowed in a previous episode (episode 6 I think), it is extremely difficult to tie down that concept with the information given in the penultimate episode. I know that a special episode is supposed to answer all of these questions still looming about, but I highly doubt they can adequately address all of the issues in the story to which most don’t even make sense in the first place.
Overall, I wouldn’t advise anyone to watch this. It has great art and music but aside from that it doesn’t have anything else going for it. You can’t even label it as a guilty pleasure anime because this show attempts to be something serious and revolutionary, but fails tremendously at it because although it had a lot of elements that could’ve made it great, how it tied together all of its elements were lackluster. Instead of feeling satisfied at the “conclusion”, I was left with questions, and not the good kind where you anticipate more episodes, but the bad kind where you ask yourself “there’s more to this show?”.

I didn't bother looking at this show when the season started because I thought it was just gonna be another Monster Musume (i.e. filled with juvenile ecchi scenes). Fortunately, my friend kept on suggesting that I give it a try because it's leagues different from the old Monster Museme and I finally gave it a shot. This show was not by any means the best of the season, but it was an enjoyable watch and one that I liked to partake in when I simply wanted something relaxing.
Dr. Monster Musume is what I like to nickname this show because it follows two medical doctors
...
(one human, Glenn and one Lamia or snake-woman, Sapphe) and how they go about diagnosing and curing the different demi-humans of Lindworm (the city where they live). It was interesting to see the different demi-humans that inhabited Lindworm, and I especially appreciated how similar the biology of these demi-humans were to their real world counterparts. For example, details on how Lamia's are cold blooded or how centaurs hooves are prone to damage tickled the science nerd in me due to the similaries with our real life snakes and horses.
The characters of the show were average. The protagonist, Glenn is kinda dense toward the feelings of the girls around him; Sapphe has some slight yandere tendecies; etc. Despite being average, they were still a pleasing bunch of characters that I had fun with watching.
The art is decent, but the CGI can get distracting at times as it falls in the "bad" category. Still, the above average world building and lore was enough to compensate for the mediocre art and CGI.
Overall, I liked Dr. Monster Musume. It might not win anime of the season, but it was a relaxing show mostly about monster biology with a bit of ecchi and romance sprinkled in.

Rent-a-GF, I really wanted to like you because you had good art, had a banger of an OP, and had stellar waifu designs, but I just couldn't. You were a toxic relationship, and one that I want to forget as soon as possible.
Rent-a-GF has a unique story I guess. You rarely encounter "romantic comedies" where a guy conveniently rents a girlfriend to get rid of his woes after a break-up. However, this novelty was all I enjoyed about rent-a-GF because although the plot was passable in its own bizarre way, the characters weren't.
Chizuru was an odd character and one that I didn't really
...
like up until the end. She started of as a professional in her part-time job (i.e. a rental girlfriend), but slowly diverged from this professionalism and became a lot more intimate (in her unique way) with her client Kuzuya. She acts cold and harsh towards him but also spoils him on the side. It wasn’t until the last episode that it became apparent to me that she really cared for him despite Kuzuya being a horrible person. Chizuru's ability to accept Kuzu for who he truly is made her likeable.
Mami was your crazy ex that dumped you for no clear reason, but when you find someone else, decides that she was wrong and wants you back in the most indirect way possible through stalking and sabotaging your current romance.
Ruka had the best design out of all the waifus (in my opinion), but she became pretty clingy in a heartbeat and became too fixated in the “love” that she was feeling. I mean, how can you still be friends with a person that basically embarrassed you in front of his family by calling you a pathological liar not to mention wanting to be that person's girlfriend?
Sumi was the only decent character of the series. She’s just a really shy and awkward girl that wants to better herself. Yeah, you could argue that her being unable to speak with other people is a kinda a drag, but at least she acknowledges her weakness and tries to work on it.
Then finally, we have Kuzuya, the star of the show and the most annoying character I have ever gotten the displeasure of meeting. The dude has some good points, don’t get me wrong. When he saved Chizuru and stood up for Sumi was great. However, as soon as he does these “heroic” deeds, he equally reverts to being a lying scumbag. As mentioned, he embarrassed Ruka, he "faked" a confession with Chizuru and the list goes on and on that, I would rather not elaborate because it will come off as ranting. The dude is way too immature and indecisive for being a college student, and I feel there is no means of salvation from his scumbaggery.
Overall, rent-a-GF was a show that I thought would get better with time. I acknowledge how good the art and music were and the plot in itself wasn’t really bad. However, most of the characters were unlikeable and the comedy was a fiasco of cringe and awkwardness.

I first heard about Uzaki-chan when the controversial Red Cross poster was a thing on youtube. I thought it was extremely silly to be angry at something so trivial, yet I think we are just in a day and age when people will complain about almost anything.
Uzaki-chan is your typical slice-of-life and there is barely any story. We simply follow the daily lives of Uzaki Hana and Sakurai Shinichi (aka senpai). It sounds simple and it is because that's the type of story Uzaki-chan is. Although the story is bare-bones, the interactions of the characters, particularly between Hana and Shinichi is where the fun
...
is at. Hana is an outgoing kouhai that wants to hang out (and annoy) Shinichi, whereas initially, Shinichi simply wants to be left alone because he likes his "private" time. Gradually, Shinichi warms up to Hana and finds their interactions a lot more fun than simply being alone. It's basically a cycle of these two hanging out and being put in awkward and hilarious situations. They also tend to bicker a lot and their verbal confrontations are also a good time.
Hana as a character is indeed annoying, but if you've had friends that are as annoying as her, I can guarantee you that it's a blast. It may get awkward and frustrating but at the end of the day, you'll have your barrel of laughs. Shinichi is laid back and reserved and to some degree is the opposite of Hana, which is why Hana annoying him is absolutely hilarious to watch.
Overall, I enjoyed Uzaki-chan a lot. It may not be revolutionary in its plot and may not have the most complex characters out there, but it did its job at being funny. The characters may indeed not be for everyone, but it sure cracked me up more than another certain rom-com show this season. Pick this up if you enjoyed the shenanigans of Takagi-san and Nagatoro-san.

Unpopular (personal) opinion - the climax of Oregairo was not as good as the previous seasons. Before I explain why I didn't like it as much, let me get this out of the way first, I'm an Iroha fan. If that was more than enough for you to stop reading my review then that's fine, but if you're interested as to why I think the last season wasn't as good as objectively as possible, then thank you for reading on.
Oregairo was a fascinating anime during seasons 1 and 2 as the main theme was about building relationships. Hikki, the protagonist, was a loner and
...
felt that he didn't need human connections because it was too much of a chore. The other characters, Yukino, Yui and Iroha, to some degree also felt similarly isolated, albeit different circumstances. Yukino was similar to Hikki and just couldn't jive with other people; Yui has insecurities with her relationships with people and to avoid conflict simply agree with them even if she's not comfortable, and Iroha hides her true nature behind her cute gestures despite being really conniving and manipulative. You could consider these people as "rejects" of society that can't fit in, which was a dominant theme way back. It was entertaining to have these people find comfort with one another, but due to their past experiences, question the authenticity of what they have, which led the famous "I want something genuine" line of Hikki.
Now, we go to season 3. The first part of season 3 for me was extremely boring. This is just my personal preference, but I found the prom dilemma too juvenile for my taste, especially when the previous seasons were a lot more mature (i.e. even adults have issues deciding whether their relationships are "genuine"). Then, for the latter half of the series, it became a typical romantic comedy. Yes, I'm aware of the title, but because seasons 1 and 2 were quite different from season 3, I never really considered Oregairo a rom-com. Finally, we move to the last part of the show, where one girl was "chosen" and became the official partner of Hikki. Yes, a part of me is salty about the choice, but I'm much more concerned about why he chose in the first place. I find it extremely odd that a loner for how many years, with barely any idea at how to handle (platonic) relationships and even questioned the authenticity of such a relationship, decided it was alright to pursue a romantic one. It just felt out of place, especially since there were never any major hints (at least to me) that he valued any particular relationship over the other.
Even though I didn't enjoy most of oregairo s3, I have to applaud the ending. I liked that the relationships they built over the course of the story didn't just crumble because a girl was "chosen". Moreover, it ended the story in an open manner and the viewers are more than welcome to tailor their own ending depending on your own preferences.
Overall, Oregairo 3 just didn't click with me as much as the previous two seasons. A part of it is because my ship didn't "officially" sail, but more so because I felt it deviated from what it previously established, which was building and strengthening relationships. Either way, I appreciate the author for giving us a predominantly good story and I congratulate the people that enjoyed this last season.

Decadence started off as a really interesting anime, but kinda fizzled towards the end. It wasn't a bad show in itself, but I felt that it could have been a lot more than a "good" show if it allowed itself to develop more.
The setting of decadence was unique because it was both a post-apocalyptic and gaming anime. Mixing these two themes may be odd, but it kinda works, at least for decadence. The viewers don't even need to wait that long for this reveal as it comes as early as episode 2. When you contrast the themes of episodes 1 and 2, it really
...
seems like you are watching a different anime altogether. Aside from the story, I especially adored the fight mechanics as it had thorough explanations of how the combat equipment worked and where to strike the enemy to do the most damage.
The main characters of the show, Kaburagi and Natsume, were an interesting pair. I would define them as having a pseudo-daughter-father relationship as both needed each other early on to get over their own traumas and achieve their goals. This was particularly interesting given that they are both from different "worlds". The minor characters of the show were fine and didn't really stand out to me, except for Jill as her frankness and indifference (at times) was a barrel of laughs.
The art of decadence is decent and I particularly liked the color palettes of Kabu and company. The CGI though was not as good, but I've seen a lot worse, so I give it a pass. The sound was an absolute banger, especially the opening theme. I have this thing of always playing the OP twice every episode because it was just that good.
Overall, I like decadence but saddened that it was not able to be more than just a "good" show. I felt that the world and story could have been explored more for reasons that I don't wanna explain in this review because it'll spoil some things and is too much of a drag to write as I'm not fond of long reviews. When compared to the other shows in this season, it certainly is one of the better ones, but it's an anime that you can pass up and won't miss that much.

WOW! That's the first thing that came to my mind after finishing this series. I've been a fan of this series since season 1 and even picked up the manga where season 1 left off. Knowing the details of the manga and the usual outcome of manga arcs adapted into movies (ex. a lot of content gets cut-off), I thought that I wouldn't be surprised or shaken by what would happen in the movie, but was I seriously wrong. Everything in this movie was absolutely stellar.
The story is Made in Abyss and hence I don't think you need to be reminded of how well
...
crafted the world and plot are. I particularly appreciate how religiously the manga was followed in the movie that there were barely (if any) deviations from the source material.
Snippets of character growth and histories for the main cast (Riko, Reg and Nanachi) were also shown in the movie. These tidbits of information are unsurprising given that the manga is still ongoing and a lot more room for character development is available. What interested me the most was the appeal of Bondrewd in the movie. He was definitely a complex character for me and one that I did not understand even when it ended given his contradicting actions with the children. On one hand, he was a father figure, but on the other, he viewed them as laboratory subjects.
The music and animation were absolutely breathtaking from the peaceful sceneries and calming orchestra music to the fight choreography and background noises. Everything was set-up to allow the viewer to "feel" the environment that the characters were in.
Overall, I absolutely adore the Made in Abyss movie and highly recommend to anyone that started season 1. It is definitely a must-watch for any fan.

Bokurano is one of those shows that you could feel would've been a masterpiece (for drama fans) if it didn't lose steam (we'll get back to that later). The plot follows a group of kids that were tricked to pilot a giant mechanical robot and are forced to fight "invader" robots from another planet. The catch is, after every fight, the pilot dies because the robot steals the pilot's lifeforce away. This creates fantastic character drama situations, as these kids that have barely lived, are forced to cope with their impending doom.
The characters are the real meat of Bokurano. I find it impressive how
...
the writer was able to create the different living conditions, moralities, and backstories of the children, that you could not help but sympathize, even if these character backgrounds only lasted an episode or two.
As Bokurano is, however, an old anime, the CGI is mediocre by today's standards, and the opera music backgrounds will either be loved or hated by the viewer dependent on your musical tastes.
Although I quite enjoyed Bokurano, the latter half of series was boring. This was because its predominantly character-driven drama was toned down by a substantial amount, in favor of a more political oriented drama that has been tackled to a fault by other series. The message of the second half that "humans are bad" was just too common that I had a hard time focusing because I felt the series had lost its most prized novelty (i.e. the top-notch character-driven drama).
Overall, Bokurano had an amazing first half but burned out toward the end. I found this quite unfortunate because if it had stayed on its original track, it may have gone down as a masterpiece or close to one.

I reckon this show was one of the most hyped-up shows of this season, and maybe even #1 if you discount returning showings like ReZero. I've heard a lot from this show as it was quite a popular manhwa a few years ago, so I had high expectations. However, those expectations were quickly shattered and the way the plot is progressing, I doubt it'll get any better soon.
The story of the god of HS is as typical as any generic shounen show could be. You have your tournament arc, flashy fighting, underground conspiracy organization, and supernatural powers. Does this sound familiar? Then you've probably
...
already watched BNHA, H x H, Naruto, and Black Clover to name a few. The only difference is, at least those latter shows had the initiative to tweak the setting (e.g. BNHA was a society of heroes). The god of HS lacks any novelty in terms of setting and plot, as it's strictly a martial arts show at its core with some supernatural elements that interestingly resemble JoJo stands.
The characters in the show are also unimpressive. They more resemble cardboard based on the 4 episodes I've watched. You have the prodigy taekwondo MC, who's only goal is to eat food, fight strong opponents, and save his friends. His friends are equally unimpressive as the karate part-timer is unexpressive and "cool"; while the kendo practitioner is your female hot-headed companion. Their background information are also quite generic, with the earn money for a friend and revive dying martial arts school troupes.
The only good point of the god of HS is how fluid the animation was and how well the fight choreography and camera changes were handled. These were supplemented by the fantastic sound that amped up the atmosphere.
Overall, the god of HS is just another overhyped show, because pretty animations are always a jolly good time. However, if you want story with that good old time, then I suggest you look elsewhere.

When this season started, Princess Dive got me really interested due to the above-average visuals and cute characters. After watching it, I got exactly what I expected - a lot of waifus , some stupid antics and minimal to no plot development.
Story-wise, it is clear from the get-go that this isn't the focus of the anime. Sure there are hints regarding the pasts of the characters and indeed there were some scenes, particularly in the last episode that attempted to expound some character arcs, but nothing that really allowed you to really know and understand the characters themselves and their motives.
This lack of
...
understanding between the viewer and the characters, was to me, the weakest part of Princess Dive. You have these interesting character designs, particularly the waifus, but there is not really enough substance that allows you to really love or hate these characters. Instead, you simply admire the characters based on how cute they are, and nothing more.
The comedy, although not as spectacular as some of the other shows this season was alright - it was neither too boring and generic nor was it excellent.
Overall, Princess Dive is the type of anime that you pick up when you just wanna put your brain to ease and simply watch something visually appealing, with just the right amount of humor to keep you invested, but not addicted. Definitely suggested for the array of interesting waifu designs, but not for people looking for an anime with good plot or characters.
