I went into this anime, not knowing it was a prequel to Barakamon. I never watched the anime, but on social media, its fans were in despair at their main character falling for the kid when they grow up?? Like everyone loved this story, only to end up feeling betrayed by the author for letting this happen??? So it lowered my star rating by 1 since I didn't watch the series after all.
But other than that, without knowing it was connected to that show, I decided to watch this for Tsutsui because I saw a short of his backstory and thought he would be
...
hilarious which he kinda was. But my favorite ended up being Yukio Kondou because he may be ordinary, but in the crowd, he really is the sweetest and most sincere type of guy. I won't lie that I kinda wanted to ship him and Handa together, and I'm so sad that he doesn't get enough love from the fans.
However, the story isn't all that funny to me (¬_¬") Which is why it got such a low score, and it further doesn't motivate me to watch the main story. The characters are charming, but the jokes are really basic.

I like it for its visual aesthetic, and the characters are a lot of fun. However, I can see why this series struggles to have a season 3. ( ̄ ̄|||)
It went for the "break the 4th wall" goofy shtick with a serious plot line underneath like Gintama, but it has a problem with timing. Gintama is a great example on when to be comedic and when to be serious, and that's by having the jokes lead to a serious realization near the ending or the climax of the episode, but not in a "oh, I shouldn't have laughed situation", but more of a "Oh, so
...
this is why he acts the way he does, and I think I love this idiot more after all he's been through" kind of feeling.
Nanbaka does it too, but a little too much that it's become repetitive, especially when it concerns Jyugo with the whole "He's only good at this one thing, and nothing else, but we like you anyway" speech. By season 2, I'm like "Why are you having a heart-to-heart right now? YOU SHOULD BE RUNNING/FIGHTING!" Season 2 could've ended with the big battle with a proper cliff hanger, if they had cut down some of those scenes! Like please, move on!

I really like this fresh new aesthetic with sparkles and comedy! ☆*:.。.o(≧▽≦)o.。.:*☆
Although when it started getting way too serious for my liking, it had me like (ᵕ—ᴗ—) Cuz it kinda ruined the vibe with all this scifi stuff. It could've worked if there was a proper build up to it and not the main character suddenly trauma dumping on his supervisor's little brother. It was just off-putting.
It also bothers me that the main protagonist is 16. I thought everyone was at least in their 20s-30s, but now that I know there's teenagers in there, it further takes me away from the serious vibes that it
...
tries to balance with the comedy. I know 16 year olds can be tried as an adult, but his reason to be in jail is kinda dumb when you don't have all the facts until later. I feel the same for all the other characters that are below the age of 20. One of them is already looking for a disciple and I'm like, "Little Baby Man, you're only 16!"
My brain just won't accept it, so to cope, I aged them 4 more years. So Jyuugo and Nico are both 20, Uno is 22 and Rock is 23. It just feels right.

I give this show only one point less because of the lolicon trope for obvious reasons, but the show actually handled the concept really well with making the protagonist not a pervert at all, and actually regard Filo as his daughter. His cool vibes really reminds me of Ichigo from Bleach, and I admire his business savvy mind, and how he's kind but at no fault of his own.
I also really like the subtle(?) romance between him and Raphtalia, and how they handled him adapting to seeing her as a woman over the series. I don't get any ick with how they met in the
...
beginning since Raphtalia isn't human and she's actually a young adult, but due to the abuse she suffered, her appearance kept her as a child, but once she got the basic needs met, she aged properly. I also love how she handles her jealousy cutely but also maturely, and remains having a good relationship with the other girls in a motherly way. A lot of other anime has the girls go through a 'woe is me' phase, but Raphtalia actually takes more active approaches instead.
Filo kinda annoyed me though with her childishness in the beginning, so I got scared for a moment, but once Melty came into the picture, she really mellowed out. I guess she just needed more kid interactions which made me like her.
I also like Melty as well because she's not as strong, but she's brave and uses her royal status properly and her flaws is just a part of growing up.
And liking this many female characters is surprising me because I usually don't care for this many female characters that aren't in a female driven show. Usually girls would be either boring or annoying, but I actually like a lot of them, besides Bitch/Whore. I guess I like them because they're not overexaggerted or overbearing. Their personalities and their growth is instead properly shown and when they're happy, I can't help being happy, too.
And they got a new member who looks like the hopeless dumb kind, but with how this show handles female characters, I'm actually looking forward to see how she grows.
Althoooooouuuuuuugh, I've seen the reviews for the next 2 seasons, and I don't think I want to ruin my experience with this show, so I may not watch the next season and just believe that Raphtalia and Naofumi got married, settled at the fishing port town and had kids, Filo and Melty become queen besties and green haired girl married bow guy after clearing her name.
