when I added this manga to my list, I was shocked to see how few other members had read this title. now, on the surface, this looks like just a dog-lovers' story, but it's way more than that. I don't own a dog, but this is, by far, the best manga I have ever read!
the only other book series like this is "all creatures great and small", a very fine story by an English vet about his experiences with animals in War-time England.

there is manga and anime to this title, but I'm speaking about the manga here.
it sounds very typical, but it's actually a very funny story! it's the kind of story where, when it's over, you wish it could on for another book. I think what helps is the fact that the manga-ka is a woman, and she admits to using her own experiences of attending an all-girl high school. the way the girls act, and react to situations is not at all like the normal co-ed hijinx you'd expect from this kind of story. the characters are distinct and quite well-drawn; you come to ... okay, talking the anime beck here. what really stands out for me is the Japanese music and dialogue. you know, everyone going to school in Japan learns English in school, but very few grow up to use it meaningfully. in the music world, it's different, because a J-band knows the importance of American music as an influence, and they often try English lyrics, as you hear in beck. plus, you get to hear the seiyuu have whole conversations in English, whereas in most anime, the characters throw around a couple words, at the most.
