Note: Please don't be intimidated by the fact that there are 403 chapters. Every single chapter is one page, with the extras being multiple pages of bonus content (that shouldn't be skipped because there is character development in the extras).
Otome Danshi ni Koisuru Otome (which will be referred to as Otokoi from this point on) is highly recommended if you are looking for some lighthearted, character-driven comedic romance with sprinkles of growth and drama.
Before reviewing Otokoi, there is definitely an elephant in the room to address. Yes, this manga includes and sometimes relies on crossdress humor, specifically males crossdressing as females. However, the portrayal of
...
crossdressing in Otokoi is definitely not negative. Its unknown how common crossdressing is in-universe, but the author never utilizes the action in either negative or positive light except to develop characters.
Which leads me straight to where this manga's strength is: story and character. For story, Otokoi never stops moving forwards. Time does move forwards through high school, and every single mini-arc develops a character. It may not develop the main characters or the relationships, but there is always someone changing. Otokoi definitely starts of as a more romance-focused comedy, but has since transitioned into a more comedic-style romance.
If you are looking for high drama, spicy plot, and tense moments, you will not find it here. The characters in Otokoi are, as a whole, relatively mature and extremely wholesome. Because of this, the series does lack the high tension, conflict and drama that many people enjoy. Conflict still exists, to be sure, but the scale is much less than what people may expect. The flip side is, the nature of such characters allow the manga to have an excessive amount of fluff.
As for the art style, the manga is rather simplistic. There are a few pages where the art shows significant upgrades, but for the most part, the designs and art of each character are kept simple, straightforward, and consistent.
Overall, Otokoi is a manga recommended for people looking for a lighthearted, fluffy romance with comedy and character development sprinkled throughout.
9/10, would happily be confused again.
