It’s no secret that fruits basket is my favorite anime, so trust me when I say this recommendation comes from a very genuine place as a HUGE fruba fan. In my mind, both of these shows are masterpieces. Essentially, if you enjoy the mature side and darker themes of fruba, Honey and Clover is likely to become a beloved title of a similar caliber. H&C is a comedy/romance/drama much like fruits basket. It’s a coming of age story about young adults in an arts college as they tackle things like love triangles, figuring out their paths in life, finding jobs, and unrequited love. They’re both very emotionally driven stories, done differently but equally beautifully. The backstories and character arcs will tug at your heartstrings in a way that any fruits basket fan knows all too well. They both contain charming comedy and unique takes on romance. While H&C lacks the supernatural element of Fruits Basket, it uses this to its advantage and creates a world that seems truly real. The main differences originate in their respective target audiences; Fruits Basket is the quintessential shoujo, and similarly Honey and Clover is the quintessential Josei anime. While both are great, H&C is much more mature in nature, allowing it to tackle heavy topics like fruba, but in a much more unfiltered way. All in all, if you love fruits basket with all your heart like I do, give this hidden gem of a show a real chance and you won’t regret it.
