You all know why this show has shot all the way up here in MAL. The show came out half a year ago but finally has been distributed with subtitles here in the west and all the fans who have been waiting for this day to watch it finally did (maybe not entirely legal means but hey this is anime). So there’s some background if you're confused on why there's a random show that shot up to top 50 on MAL. I honestly don't think it should be quite as high all things considered but if you like NGNL then this movie will definitely satisfy
...
your need for NGNL while simultaneously irritate you to no end for a sequel to this little gem. As someone who isn't too fond of OP characters and fanservice evident in my scores of code geass, OPM and especially overlord. So this show is doing something very right that even though it might be impossible... I'm eagerly waiting for No Game No Life Season 2. Sa gemu hajimeyou.
Story 8/10
THIS
MOVIE
NEEDED
TO
BE
LONGER
The initial appeal of NGNL wasn’t being told that main duo dropkicked everyone on their path to global domination but in seeing how they did it. It was bullshit and retarded at times but the execution of each sequence with creative widely imaginative visuals and an eargasmic orchestral OST really came together to deliver a rather unique but definitely enjoyable experience. Because of course they win. They’ve already defeated the final boss and a god who’s never lost to anyone. The two mains of this movie aren’t that overpowered, but the middle act felt awfully rushed with little time being devoted to seeing how our main duo placed a world of gods and monsters under their thumbs. I don’t think it’s a spoiler when I say literally everyone dies since it’s a prequel 6000 years prior but the show does execute on some of the most emotionally poignant scenes NGNL has to offer.
Art and Sound 9/10
Stunning. It’s not quite on par with the gorgeously detailed animation or the sweeping wide shots of kimi no na wa, but regardless it’s impressive. The colours are more muted than NGNL for most of the duration but the show does has its moments where Madhouse makes it abundantly clear that this is a movie with a movie’s budget, some explosions and more dynamic action sequences especially. The OST is rather generic using mostly orchestral tracks with the odd pieces throughout and nothing is too catchy and memorable but the moments when the OST needs to deliver my god does it deliver. I’m sorry (Schiwi) it’s all spoilers beyond that.
Characters 9/10
This will largely depend on whether or not you enjoyed the original cast because… it’s pretty much the original cast. Even the voice actors are the same down to even Clammy and her elf. Creative decision or business calculation is up to you. Regardless they are different people but there’s one certain special scene in there for anyone who liked Shiro’s voice. Not much else. Shiro is best girl. Age is just a number and jail is just a room.
Enjoyment 10/10
Truly magnificent. Characters that remind you of the originals yet standing strong on their own. Eyegasms and eargasms all round. A wonderful blend of adventure, drama and comedy that actually works. While I definitely prefer something like Your Lie In April for its character drama, where it tries to mix it with comedy it suffers despite having pretty decent comedy. NGNL has no issues swapping between the two where Your Lie In April had really jarring moments (excluding Jibril sorry fuck Jibril really ruins some of the really poignant moments). As a complete package it was a joy to experience.
Overall 9/10
No Game No Life Zero is a final hurrah by the staff passionate about the series. Despite Madhouse having the money and all the voice actors and the support of fans, it is very unlikely that the legal complications that ended the original NGNL the way it did would ever allow for a proper sequel to a story way more enjoyable than it than it had a right to be. And what a note to go out on. Do I wish for more? Of course. But this is one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in recent memory.
I think properly reading through detailed reviews before watching the show in question works against the reader. A show with a majority of good points would have a positive impact on the reviewer (wow really?) and thus will influence the overall tone of their review. They will highlight the things the show did well more than they should and thus spoil the novelty of seeing these good parts yourself and you tend to notice the bad parts more (something which every show will have). This is my first ever review highlighting the good points of a movie I really enjoyed. It might have been my attachment to NGNL in general or the fact I had to wait so long to watch this film. Regardless it was an enjoyable film.
