This manga is really difficult to rate. It's like a completely different story starting at volume 4, a not very interesting one, but until that point it was really good.
From the beginning of the manga it gives a strong sense that Narumi is the protagonist. He is quirky, interesting, and pulls all the action and gives energy to the story. The kid who is supposedly the protagonist is generic, not very interesting, and gets less screen time. But at the end of volume 3 it changes.
What this means is, the manga starts ok, becomes very captivating, engaging, and excellent, with the culmination point at
...
the end of volume 3. After that point the manga becomes entirely generic, boring, and looses all energy. It feels like it suddenly turned from an engaging dramatic fighting manga full of action into almost a typical slice-of-life school manga about a kid, with the kid as the protagonist, but not an interesting protagonist. There is also the girl but her character (or more like, her lack of character) fails to keep the story interesting.
Until volume 4 I became very engaged and then it stopped, I read the 4'th volume but it just wasn't very interesting in comparison. The action was just kind of going slowly and without a point.
If I had to rate the first 3 volumes I would say it's a 9/10
Volume 4 was a 5/10 and I dropped it.
Because of this, I find it difficult to give it an overall rating. I would rather not rate it at all, but if I must it will be an average of 5 and 9, that is 7
I think you won't loose much from reading only the first 3 volumes, because it's like a complete story of its own. So feel free to try it out.

Definitely worth watching, I was very satisfied with it, but it does have some problems which could turn some people off.
An excellent story with compelling characters. A very strong lead female character, and mostly interesting, complex villains, but many secondary characters are sort of flat (perhaps because most of the character development is spent on the lead Erin and the beasts/animals she interacts with?).
This show doesn't offer a clear view of good and evil, rather, it shows a rather deep, complex view of life.
Very unusual art stylized like some older anime.
This show's atmosphere is sort of heavy and oppressive, even though it has some
...
happy moments it also has many depressing moments.
This show seems to suffer from limited funds. Lots of reused graphic and music (and some of the graphic looks really... cheap (but the show also has some some very artistic, beautiful graphic segments).
This show is plagued by an unreasonable amount of flashbacks and retrospection, and feels unnecessarily stretched. (even has 2(?) episodes which are pure retrospection). While in a way this helps in creating a more nostalgic, melancholic feeling, it can be far too slow at times. Feels like the whole show could have been done in 26 episodes rather than 50, I don't like skipping anything in a show, but this show has forced me to skip through some episodes every now and then, it was just too much repetition of the same scenes over and over.
This show has a very satisfying ending.

Overall the writing wasn't bad for the most part.
But I have a problem with the tone shift.
This review will be full of negative bias, I hate pointless angst.
The story starts like a slightly depressing but overall happy and funny story for kids, about determination and all that nice stuff.
But, later the action gets muddled, the story is increasingly filled with angst for the sake of angst (at times it feels like it makes no sense plot-wise and the plot gains nothing from it, just angst for the sake of angst)
This culminates with some particularly nasty and sort of cliche character death (which I sort of
...
expected, but that didn't make me hate it any less)
After chapter 138 my enjoyment of this manga fell to 0 and now I feel defiled, dirty and disgusted.
I enjoy stories which fill me with happy feelings, I hate when a story fills me with resentment and urges for bodily harm done to the author.
There's nothing more to it, I simply hate this story now... I don't recommend it, unless you enjoy torturing little imaginary kids and character death.
As much as I'd like to, I'm unable to make myself rate this any higher. I wish I never read this manga, should have stayed with the anime.

Madoka Magica is an overhyped, overrated, pretentious mess. The pacing is horrid, characters are stale, the story is all over the place and the conclusion is plainly bad.
It's a "dark" magical girl series, which fails to get any emotional response because of how bad the pacing and the characters are. All this is held together by very pretentious "artsy" artwork and music. The only thing decent in the whole series is Kyubey, everything else is passable at best, horrible at worst.
This series is neither dark nor is it artsy, It's just a pretentious mess which tries to be dark and fails, the "dark" plot twists
...
are neither unexpected nor are they particularly original, nor did they make me care about what was happening. This series tries to have some message, and also fails, because everything the characters do proves to have been a pointless waste of time by the end, when the plot completely disregards all their prior actions.
Characters are stale and cliche, they don't change, don't grow, anything they do has no relevance to the plot.
The music/sound in this series would be good, but it's hard to swallow it together with how pretentious the rest of the series is. Pretentious to the max.
Enjoyment... I guess Kyubey was enjoyable.
I advise everyone stay away from this series. If you really need a "dark" and "edgy" magical girl series, try something like Uta Kata, it's far from perfect but certainly more coherent.
