*Non-Spoiler Review*
If there's an anime that I would recommend to someone who has never watched an anime before, and has the stigma that "Anime is fanservice trash that flashes boobs and has no plot", this is it. I have and will always tell them to start with Kill la Kill. Being that I had not watch many anime prior to watching Kill la Kill, I had this stigma of it being fanservice garbage, too. Boy, was I wrong, and if you are thinking what I thought, I hope for this review to convince you to watch this.
Story: 8/10
The beginning might not be the best
...
to most people, but I personally enjoyed it. It's not plot heavy with the overarching story, but more a good time that gets you to know the characters and have a laugh. At this point, Kill la Kill is a comedy show. However, around the middle, a tone and plot shift happens. What makes this shift so good is the fact that it isn't choppy and goes smoothly into it, so even if you loved the beginning's lighthearted fun, you also will love the dark, serious tone later.
Art: 10/10
Kill la Kill hosts some of the best animation ever seen come out of any anime studio, independent or major. The animation feels smooth, and there's tons of movement going on in every frame. Kill la Kill has it's fair share of Fate Stay/Night Unlimited Blade Works type of animation moments, with detailed backgrounds, but are limited in movement and look more like a painting, but the majority of the time is spent with the slightly less detailed but more animation packed into each moment and crevasse possible. Sometimes, limited animation is used for a comedic effect. I don't consider this a flaw, as it is intentionally used, and not because of budgetary issues, and it adds to scenes and makes them funnier.
Sound: 10/10
Kill la Kill has one of the best soundtracks in any anime ever. Composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, who you may be familiar with for composing popular anime with renowned soundtrack Attack on Titan, did an amazing job on this. Every piece of music fits perfectly with the character or moment played, and all are great pieces I listen to even after watching Kill la Kill for a long time. The music from Kill la Kill can be heard over and over again without getting boring. Some standout songs include Before my Body is Dry, or the one that says "Don't Lose Your Way", and Blumenkranz.
Character: 8/10
Kill la Kill has a character with a wide variety of personalities, all of which are enjoyable as hell. The main character, Ryuuko Matoi, is one of the most 3 dimensional and enjoyable protagonists in an anime. The way she was written is creative, and her gradual development isn't wasted and comes to a great conclusion at the end. Mako Mankanshoku, the secondary protagonist, is one of the most enjoyable and lighthearted characters to ever grace the anime industry. Even in some of the dark moments of Kill la Kill, Mako is always there to make you happy and smile. Satsuki Kiryuuin, the main antagonist, is a great one. Notable side characters include the rest of the Mankanshoku family, Aikuro Mikisugi, the two main protagonists' teacher, and Takarada, the money making god.
Enjoyment: 9/10
Enjoyment is the most crucial part to how good a series is. If it isn't enjoyable, then what's there to like about it? Watching something not enjoyable is almost as fun as doing homework. Thankfully, Kill la Kill is very enjoyable. Whether it's lighthearted and joking or dark and serious, you can't stop fanning yourself when you watch Kill la Kill.
Overall, Kill la Kill is a 9/10, and is one of my personal favorites. Also, if you're a dub watcher, Kill la Kill host one of the best dubs you'll ever watch in anime, so there's a plus for you guys.
