For my first review, I’ve decided to do it on one of my favorite series. Itakiss it’s literally my comfort anime before Kimi Ni Todoke.
This isn’t the type of romance anime where the story slowly progresses leading to both falling in love with each other. It’s not one where the male MC only has a soft spot for female MC and it goes on from there.
Our male MC is Naoki Irie. He is a haughty, cold hearted “super-ikemen” who tends to act the same towards all the girls. Nevertheless you can tell deep down he actually does like Kotoko.
He gives mixed signals, lets
...
her [Kotoko] in then shuts her out. As though he himself doesn’t know exactly what he’ll be getting into, on the grounds of him not understanding his feelings he pushes her way. He ultimately wants her to be just for him. Kotoko has only loved Naoki, she has a friend [Kinnosuke] who was a bit of a sweetie he truly loved her and wanted her to be happy with him. Yet she never brought herself to the point where she could actually love him back.
When it’s time for Kotoko to learn how to be a nurse [Keita] is introduced, it’s really when Naoki seems to understand that there’s “competition” for Kotoko.
That upsets Naoki, in-turn making him act even colder towards her and ignores her until he realizes (thanks to Kinnosuke) that he’s jealous of Keita.
Our female MC is an absent minded, cheerful, emotional but rather clumsy girl who is very determined and driven. She falls in love with Naoki during his freshman speech on the first day of school. They were placed in different classes and she tries to study her way to get transferred to his class but that never happens, so she musters up the courage to hand him a love letter 💌 which Naoki turns down… it moves on from there
The pacing does feel rushed, it moves along quickly in terms of the events that take place. If Kaoru Tada [itakiss’s mangaka] hadn’t passed away… had she been able to have completed the manga, it could have been even better (not be as rushed and seeming as they just crammed as much of the manga as possible to accommodate)
The series ends on a good note as she intended, the animation is well adopted, certain developments lead to dramatic moments.
I’ve cried, I’ve laughed, I’ve been shocked even with as many times as I’ve seen it. Kotoko and Naoki’s mom [Noriko] get along well their interactions made me laugh. The mom alone i find hilarious cause she just does ridiculous things. Kotoko’s “best friends” [Satomi and Jinko] were both soul irking to me.
There was a time where I wouldn’t recommend it, but not because it wasn’t good but because I would gate-keep it.
Now I’d definitely say give this anime a shot if you’re looking into watching it.
The songs are so good and catchy they play in my head at random moments like now as I type this part.
I’ll likely never get tired of watching this show if I’m being honest; cause if I need a extra boost or I’m just plain sad I will definitely watch it even if it’s not the date I set for it.
I understand it’s not for everyone, however, those bad reviews about this series aren’t justifiable.
I rate based on my enjoyment, Itazura Na Kiss is a 10/10
