I couldn’t recommend this manga enough! Since around a year I’ve found it pretty hard to get into reading any new shoujo, mainly cause most shoujo are very much centered around high school and that’s just not as relatable to me anymore. I’ve had this shoujo sitting in my reading list for a while and seeing as it had a good number of chapters I thought I’d give it a go. To my surprise I got really hooked on the story and couldn’t stop reading it!
Unusual for shoujo it is set from a guys perspective and usually I don’t find those stories as entertaining, but
...
Eiji is a really relatable character and so I found myself pulled into the story. The other characters are also very interesting and it’s particularly enjoyable to get to experience all of the characters’ viewpoints in the different situations. All of the characters are very memorable. Oddly even though the characters are all so different from each other, each one of them is relatable in their own way.
The art is simple yet pretty, which I think suits the story well. The pacing of the story is perfect and I never felt that it was boring. I guess it does deal with some typical shoujo tropes (e.g. the childhood friend), but it takes a more realistic and serious approach. The story is built around the relationships between the characters and how things don’t usually turn out the way you’d expect. It’s a shoujo that isn’t just happy, but it’s also not tragic or exaggerated; it sits comfortably in the middle and I very much enjoy that!

The main way I would describe this manga would be to say that it is extremely cute! Personally I love the art even with it being more on the cute side, as it fits to the characters and the story. I've found that I really ended up loving all of the characters as the story progressed. Most of the chapters so far have been little episodes and there is not necessarily a long arc like in many other shoujo mangas. Usually I much prefer mangas with long arcs, but it hasn't bothered me so far with this manga and it has been refreshing to read.
...
In general the story and characters make for a really fun read and I love the humor brought about by the characters interacting. Progression between the main characters is definitely slow, but I don't mind it as it fits with the story. All in all if you're looking for a cute and light-hearted shoujo to read with interesting characters I would definitely recommend this manga!

Can't believe that there isn't a review for this manga!! It's so cute and I honestly haven't laughed so much while reading a shoujo manga since a while. Sure you could say that it's your average shoujo manga where the main characters become friends, then someone starts liking the other person etc., so the story isn't really anything super exciting, nothing we haven't seen done before. However the characters are really the driving force here. Their personalities and the way expressions are drawn just make this manga so funny and cute, how could you not enjoy it!
It makes for an easy, fun and quick read.

If you haven't read a lot of shoujo, but you do like what you have read so far I'd give it a read. If you do read a lot of shoujo just give it a read for the humor in it and you shouldn't be disappointed. If you know you don't like shoujo, just don't read shoujo, cause literally every shoujo manga will make use of some of the same tropes and characters.
The art is pretty cute and very generic shoujo (not that that is a bad thing). I do like other works by this manga artist and can only recommend that if you did like this manga you should check out her other work Risouteki Boyfriend!

To start out with the positive aspects to this manga, what probably pulled me into the story was the way the fashion or clothes are drawn. This is as the story is set in the Meiji era and therefore it is interesting to see both very beautifully drawn traditional Japanese and Western clothing incorporated into the manga. Sumi (lead female character) also clearly comes over as very pretty through the drawing style. Yet sadly these few perks are unable to outweigh the problems which I have found with this manga.
Beginning with the pacing of the story, it truly throws the reader around, which does not
...
help at all to try to create an emotional connection between Sumi and the reader, or for that case any other character either. Partially also the pacing's fault is that the character development appears as inconsistent. Characters seem to change, but only to revert back the next instant, something that is obviously confusing. Moreover each character does face their own traumas or radical changes in personality, however these seem poorly expressed, through the fact that it is used, but without great depth to it and just cast aside or ignored when of no use to the plot. This is also what makes the story so predictable from the very beginning, the plot is character driven, but the characters themselves are predictable! It should also be noted if one does make use of psychological profiling of the characters, it should be consistent and "reading in between the lines" should let the reader try to figure out how each character is influenced by an event and why they act in a certain way. The essence of ambiguity and uncertainty to how the antagonists in the story would act, is something that is completely lacking in this story.
These are just some of the spoiler free inconsistencies I would like to mention in the story, as there are many spoiler related things I could add, especially about how there are quite a few occurrences that are just plain out not fitting to the time period. There are many things that can stretch the boundaries of a manga in a good way, but for this manga which is supposed to be rather serious, there are just too many loose ends to be understood as charming.
The most disappointing thing about this manga is especially that it could have so much potential for a more enthralling and gripping plot, as well as characters. If you are looking for a manga that will grip your emotions and keep you internally screaming at the most important moments, then this is certainly not the one. I would not recommend to read this manga, as there are so many better shoujo romance mangas out there, that deserve so much more praise then this one, and have far better developed plots and characters that are able to take hold of the reader without letting go.

Overall i gave this manga a 10, because I truly enjoyed it! Even after having read tons of shoujo manga, I found this to be very refreshing due to the humor contained within it and the realistically imperfect characters.
The story is relatively predictable, but that doesn't mean in any way that it is boring. The situations that the main and side characters are faced with become even more interesting through the reactions of the characters and how they deal with the issues that confront them. Moreover, the characters are very loveable and reader will become easily attached to them. What I love the most
...
about the main character is how awkward she is about love since she has never experienced this before, as well as how by using her character the author is able to realistically express how hurtful loneliness can be.
The art style is very typical shoujo, so of course basically all female characters have huge eyes, which I find slightly irritating at times. However, I believe that the way expressions of characters have been drawn and how the main character is seen to react in situations, completely makes-up for this.
As stated previously I enjoyed the manga, and this is especially due to the humorous yet realistic expression of emotion, worries, awkwardness and a whole lot more which you will have to read the manga to find out!
