Both are incredibly good shounen series, and while OPM is more humorous, there's a high chance you'll enjoy one if you enjoyed the other.

They are both of the horror/psychological/thriller genre. Both revolve around mysterious, rural towns with some sort of secret (a curse in Higurashi, 'monsters' in Shiki). There is a fair amount of gore and a generally creepy atmosphere in both.

Both feature cute looking girls that have darker personalities than you initially think. Both are part of the horror/psychological genre despite looking like a cute-ish slice of life. However, Higurashi is a lot gorier and creepier and the characters are a lot more bipolar compared to Gakkougurashi.

Both are set in an all boys' school and have really ridiculous plots. The main group of boys in each dress in girly clothing against their will (though they accept it anyway). The student council is pretty important in both as well (and Hiroshi Kamiya voices the student council president in both).

Both are incredibly sweet shoujo series with a lovable main couple. The art style of both feature soft, pastel colours and is really nice to watch. Besides a great romance between the two main characters, they have strong friendships with side characters.

Both begin following a very similar storyline. The main protagonists are young, determined and very bright characters in general (both also have green hair!). Both have a wide range of charismatic characters. Both contain epic battles and action you'd expect to see in a shounen series.
