I read the first 40 odd chapters of the Manga and was never really hooked and disliked the plot twist so I gave up. I do think the Anime did the right thing in Episode 10 with the same plot twist. If they were going to keep to the manga they should have had the plot twist around the end of episode 3. This would perhaps have benefited the anime by tightening it up which it very much needs. But I also don't mind the anime story arc, what I do dislike is the characterizations of Yuu and Fuuka and flat pacing. Fuuka early on

As good as it gets. A wonderful, realistic portrayal of young romance, it's blossoming and deepening. The characters are very endearing and yet real persons. The nearest I can come to a quibble for this series is that I would have expected both leads to have more suitors.
The emotions that both go through seemed spot on. I think of myself as reasonably intelligent and though my experience happened in my 20s I remember a girl falling for me and I having no clue. You have to reorient your whole way of thinking especially if they are a good friend. ...

I think the first episode ending was a wonderful hook. The second episode drew you in more. But Ga-Rei Zero, despite strong action scenes, and great leads fails, and really, fails utterly because it doesn't remain true to it's characters.
As the back story develops after episode 2 the bond between Yomi and Kagura receives a full accounting, and it is the rather well developed main characters and wonderful interaction between them and also the members of their team that made these several episodes captivating.
