This manga became instantly my favorite in the Slice of Life + Romance genre. The author does a fantastic job of portraying endearing MCs and support characters. Even characters who at first look like comedic relief get to have some substance and/or emotional depth. The quality of the narration and the expressiveness of the drawing did an amazing job of bringing me laughter, tears and fist pumping excitement as the arcs developed.
This romance is not about a long exploration of how the MCs meet one another and end up together. This part zooms by real fast, and that's fine by me, because in exchange
...
we gain a lovely discovery of what it means to be a couple and to make it work despite the emotional baggage that one may carry. It's about struggling together and sometimes against one another to uncover how they're able to grow together. It's a real feel good story with just enough sad bits and tension to spice up the Slice of Life fondation.
Now one turn off might be how the male MC is almost a Gary Stu: he's charming, successful, kind etc.. It's almost too much. He's a bit impulsive and air headed, and he's got this "smell fetish" thing going on, but that hardly offsets how much of a mister Perfect he is. When compared to how the female MC is a concentrate of lack of confidence and inferiority complex, it may make you feel like the author is pushing extra-hard toward the Seinen readers and might underwhelm his female readers. It's all about feeling like protecting female MC and rooting for her to get out of her shell. It might turn you off, or it might put a big smile on your face like old weeb-in-his-50s me.
