This review is my opinion, it is completely fine if you disagree with it. If you want to discuss more on the anime feel free to drop a comment on my profile.
Nana is an anime about two girls of similar age who, coincidentally have the same name, and meet on their way to Tokyo. It is a shojo anime and is hence targeted at adolescent girls or young adult women. It incorporates a lot of music and romance. I wouldn't advise watching this anime if you are someone that can't wait for a sequel because realistically speaking this anime most likely will never see a
...
sequel.
The story has a lot of deep themes involved which helps create an atmosphere filled with suspense, this being said the story is also filled with lots of comedy and even though you might find some parts of it corny I believe it's enjoyable. Despite having a pretty average plot Ai Yazawa creates emotional attachments to the characters that make you more invested in the story. The pacing of the story is pretty good, it doesn't rush through much at all but instead builds up the relationships that these two girls form with other people and each other realistically.
I admire Ai Yazawa's will to work on characters that aren't entirely one-dimensional, the contrast shown between the two characters and their realistic behaviors, such as Hachi's idiosyncratic tendency to fall for boys easily, adds a lot of spice to the anime on top of that; the anime deep dives into the thoughts of the characters and their perspectives on certain situations, which makes it easier to become invested in each individual.
Moving onto the visuals, where the anime loses a few points. The geometrically disfigured anime characters may be an eye sore at first but you'll quickly get over it. This doesn't mean that madhouse did a bad job at all, in fact, I'd say they did a quintessential one by directly copying the style used in the manga. The voice actors were decent, I couldn't tell that there was anything wrong with it at all.
The enjoyment of this show is addicting, it keeps you craving for more to happen, for the next part of the story to progress. Enjoyment plays a big asset in this anime.
Overall I would give Nana a 10/10, typically a rating that I don't give most anime but this is truly a masterpiece. I sat down and questioned what there was to not like about this anime but I ended up pondering, it was paradoxical because there was nothing I disliked about the anime.
