In some ways they are very different. AtI is quiet, with a very appealing innocence to it, while SnS is flamboyant, with a constant sexual undertone. However, underneath the surface they share a profound appreciation for food and the process of creating it. Both of them will leave you wishing to adjourn to the kitchen to start appreciating the joy of cooking, and both will give you ideas for new variations on your favorite dishes.

There is a strong emphasis on the creative process -- how manga/light-novels are inspired by the people around the author, and whether the authors actually understand the nature of the relationships they write about. Of course, there's also romance, confusion, strange people doing strange things, etc. In these areas the anime go in very different directions, but that's fine.

In many ways, the newer series seems to be a straight translation of Denpa Kyoushi into a fantasy world. In DK, the character is simply unmotivated as opposed to the "shadowed past" of RMKtAR's protagonist. However, the personality and appearance are closely analogous, and the theme of "apparently incompetent teacher prevails through hidden talents and love of his students" comes across unchanged.
