I have many thoughts on Blood+ but let me start off by saying it is good. It is a solid and simple story. And that also my problem with it…
Keep in mind, Blood+ actually has alot of stuff that I love. There’s the music, the atmosphere, the mystery, the globe-trotting adventure, and some really brutal twists. I came especially for the romance and its…ok. Let’s just say my 14 yo self would've adored it. But I wasn’t expecting Blood+ to pull such pretty hefty drama from such an average story. Maybe its the great animation and soundtrack, probably the nice development in certain characters who
...
annoyed me (Kai and Mao specifically). And yeah, watching Saya come to terms with her past and grow as a warrior is compelling and def helped. It has a lot going for it
And at its best, Blood+ is a pretty thrilling adventure!
But at its worst? Its like the foundation of Blood+ is solid because its story and characters are so…average? Not in a good way. And cliched. Its close to boring by the 2nd half of the show (after ep. 32)
Here are my issues:
1. The fights were not that good at all. Really unimpressed with the sword fighting. It is very bloody though.
2. I was so ready to drop it at the before ep. 9 because none of the emotional moments between the family ( Saya, Kai, Riku, and George ) were working for me. I think because its a lot of it was tell, don't show and corny dialogue. Yes guys, i remember how happy your childhood was, you told me every mjnd numbingly happy detail of it since ep 1! With flashbacks!
3. The story relies alot of conveniences from pretty dumb decisions on the characters part. I won’t go into detail, but both the protag and antags are bad for this
4. The only way I could watch this was the dub. I didnt like the dub very much.
4. The biggest problem: the villains. Diva and her chevaliers were the most interesting to watch at the start, and the mystery surrounding their goals, how the show explores their weird family dynamic was pretty cool! But their motivation felt unsatisfying to the max and its pretty rushed. Diva had so much potential as a villain, but I lost ao much interest in her becuase we never see how she feels, what her thoughts are, or even what her past was like, unlike Saya
But look all this complaining aside, I still sat down for 3 days binge watching all 50 episodes because despite its many flaws, it still kept me invested. So overall, its a good show. Theres enough to praise here, but I guess it was just an unsatisfactory ending to an ok story/ a great mystery that got to me

Man…
Not gonna lie, I had some realllllly high hopes for this show. The first 3-4 episodes do a pretty great job setting up an interesting mystery and building intrigue around this charming but unreliable main character. And even after those eps, it brought up some real neat ideas! How are young people reacting to a society that ignores and belittes them? What are they capable of? How many (legal and nonlegal) ways are there to “save the world”?
But after all that set up, all you end up with is characters you don’t care about, an unfulfilling endpoint to the mystery, a suspense plot
...
with no exciting climax, and a romance thats dead on arrival. It’s textbook definition of disappointing.
I feel like my biggest gripe has to do with the main characters. Esp for our main heroine. I never once felt anything toward Saki because she lacks any agency in the story or the plot. Like I thought a certain theme was developing with her that would make up for her nonaction in the story, but nope! She’s just there to be Akira’s love interest. Which isn't bad per se, but the romance felt so inorganic and flat and just plain weird at points. Like she finds a naked man with no memories, a gun, and a phone that gives him whatever he wants, and only in the later eps (past ep 5) does she start getting suspicious or ask any real questions about who he is! Cmon!.
She doesn’t even seem to care much when her friends are in danger, it just all Akira all the time!
Speaking of, Akira is ok. He’s charming, but I felt like his logic and intelligence was being hindered for the sake of the “mystery” I guess?? He asks alot of questions, but he keeps making the same mistakes and the way he keeps getting tripped by by the other villians and the way these obvious clues kept going over his head made him seem way dumber than the mysterious “mastermind” the story wants him to be. Also the secret behind the reason he lost his memories and his big plan were pretty anticlimactic and nonsensical.
Music is great, random movies references were fun, character design is lovely, and so is the animation, but god everything else is just meh.
Was really looking forward to this one :(. Terror in Resonance was a better time honestly and I still gave that show a 7.

SPOILERS AHEAD
Not gonna lie, I complained and cringed and rolled my eyes more times than I can count watching this for the first time. I had a feeling I was not gonna be too fond of this anime.
Biases aside, Toradora is good. Toradora is a good, bordering on fine, romantic comedy.
The long paragraphs ahead will argue otherwise, but I think for what Toradora sets out to do, it does it well. If you like wacky hijinx and stuttering lovestruck highschoolers failing monstrously at sharing their feelings, than this’ll be right up your alley. Frankly, it just wasn’t my cup of tea, and I watched
...
it to check a show off my long, long watchlist.
This might the longest a shows ever been on my to watchlist, almost like I’ve been avoiding it for 10+ years. Maybe the fact that I’ve been out of highschool since 2015 and, even then, the dramatics of confessing and school fairs and student council campaigns were never that interesting…ah well
Things I didnt like? Well theres a lot but oh god the misunderstandings! The miscommunication! The assumptions! Midsummer Nights Dream grade foolishness right here. And I would be onboard for that if I was able to either connect emotionally to the characters involved, or, even better, if I found them actually funny. I think that was mostly why I wasn’t having that good a time. I wasn’t really laughing at anything. Humor was a little to broad or samey for me to have a good belly laugh at anything. Prolly only chuckled once or twice through the thing.
Also, something about Ryuji/Taiga as a pairing feels unbalanced? Like, to me, I don’t understand what Ryuji sees in Taiga besides a charity case. Her falling for him makes sense (the endless support, the cooking, the cleaning, etc), but Ryuji’s concern for Taiga felt like a parent, or an older brother watching over a (spoilt) child who can’t do anything for herself. Didnt help that towards the end it still felt like he had somes feelings left for Minorin, but only became interested in Taiga after she confesses in the skiing episode. I think the only thing that really made me root for the main characters to get together was their kiss scene in the final episode! (No joke, that was one of the best kiss scenes I’d ever seen). It might have something to do with the pacing. I feel like everything got resolved too damn fast, like all in the last 3 episodes.
Another big one is that Taiga as a protag is pretty hard to like. Tsunderes are one of my least favorite tropes, and yet, I decide to watch the anime starring arguably, the damn poster child for modern tsunderes so who’s the real fool here… I guess thats more my fault. I was hoping she would mellow out and stop throwing hands the futher into the series, but it only happens after she figures out her feelings for Ryuji. I think her family drama was interesting, I would've loved to see more of her and her mother/stepdad, but that wasnt a priority I guess.
The things i liked? Minorin, when she wasnt yelling which wasnt alot lol, Ryuji’s mom getting closure with her family got me a little emotional. Tiaga decision to sort things out with her family was something i wanted to see more of! That weird ass parrot that looked like it was pain in every frame. The 2nd half op and ep. That kiss scene…
Theres a bunch I have to complain about, but at the end of the day, the show was entertaining and I watched all 25 episodes. I do think that if romance anime is your bread and butter, than you should check it out anyway. It’s insane popularity means it pulled a heartstring or two for a lot of anime fans out there. It just didn’t for me. And thats ok 🤷🏾♀️
