i cannot overstate just how much i love this show. i think it's the epitome of a modern masterpiece. sports and anime are such a match made in genre pairing heaven. the animation style is so distinct and unique. the stories elegant and nuanced. sports streamline so much of the necessary pretension of the medium into something comprehensible and immediate. while i think they could've pushed the character development into something slightly more unique areas, it is such a trivial concern it barely impacted my enjoyment of the series. a high watermark in contemporary anime. it's wild to consider it's as old as it is ...

Megalo Box (Anime) add
Mixed Feelings
I actually don't think that the first season of Megalobox is all that good. I think they have a lot of things going for them conceptually. I love the setting of a dirty underground boxing competition. I think the architypes of characters were pretty entertaining, but they don't really grow much emotionally by the season finale. Motivation was pretty basic, and basic stories can be good! But there isn't much there to keep someone entertained who's looking for more critical substance past the surface of the show. Soundtrack wise, I found the show to be pretty cliche in spots, but surprisingly strong in others. A ...

while i do think that kids on the slope plays a little fast and loose with it's tropes for my liking (& runs through a pretty standard, no-power-windows plot for a romantic drama) ~ there's a technical fidelity surrounding the entire product that's absolutely endearing and gives it's characters a level of dignity i don't feel that's entirely common. i also find it does justice to it's subject matter that could really sell an interest in jazz to an audience that might be otherwise indifferent given they go into the series with an open mind. the show's great sense of pacing though, more than makes ...

Cowboy Bebop (Anime) add
rare shows come along such as this that manage to deftly balance sincere deconstruction of their genre while simultaneously reveling in the bombast of their unique vision and interpretation. what hasn't been said about bebop that hasn't already been said about the show for decades at this point? it maybe plays a little too fast and loose in it's stereotypes, if you look at it from a distance, but always treats it's characters with a baseline humanity most of it's contemporaries lack. masterpiece of a show. an absolute watermark in animation, sound tracking & character drama. the kinda thing you just need in your life.

Death Note (Anime) add
despite an initial pitch that i loved, along with a few redeeming characters thrown in the mix for good measure (looking at you aizawa & mellow); i found death note to be an absolute failure of a show in execution. nor was it a really ambitious failure you could get behind ~ it just kind of pissed away 37 episodes filled with lackluster intellectual pandering and poor characterization. i know that this puts me in the minority of takes regarding the series, but having high standards isn't a crime, and shows can just do better, point blank. even in regards to the reading of death ...
