Both are quintessential Shinbo works (although itamura and oishii actually directed it and Shibo merely supervised to ensure the end product was Shaft) Both feature mains voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya. Both feature great, weird and abstract art. Both are great fun in their own way, but both contain solid comedy. Both have pretty great production values. Neither are that plot heavy.

Both feature interesting power systems/abilities. Neither have great endings. Both are worth a watch. Both are action adventure shonen that helped define the genre. Both have great protagonists accompanied by excellent casts. Both put a large focus on characters but contain good plots.

Both feature pseudo-autistic geniuses. Both are great gateway anime. Both have complex plots but aren't that deep or intellectual overall. Both are fast and thrilling.

Both are fantasy action shonen esque anime. Neither are deep or thought-provoking but both are a great watch if you'd like to watch something dumb and stupid but also a bit fun. Both have decent fight scenes. Both have weird romantic sub plots.
