Angel Beats is truly an amazing anime with amazing animation, hilarious moments, sad moments, likeable characters, and an engaging story.. But be warned: this anime is very sad, and many people have cried while watching it. The reason why Angel Beats is so sad, is because of the premise of these high schoolers who died tragically and are sent to this purgatory high school. They each have their tragic backstories of what their lives were like before they died and they have to overcome their past traumas and experiences before they can pass on.
My favorite character in this show is a tie between Kanade
...
and Yuri. Kanade is known to be the enemy of the Afterlife Battlefront and the rival to Yuri. Kanade is pretty quiet and reserved, yet, she's also arguably the most powerful character in the series and has so many epic moments. They explain later on why Kanade is seemingly the series' antagonist, and they take it in an interesting direction, which makes you sympathize with her and get a better understanding of her situation. Yuri is my other favorite character, as she is a very strong and charismatic leader who the other members of the Afterlife Battlefront revere and respect. In most situations, she values her teammates' safety over her own, but there are some situations, where she has to sacrifice some of her teammates for the greater good, and she does so, because she knows that anyone who "dies" will instantly be revived, since no one can stay dead in the pergatory that they're in. Otonashi, the main male lead, didn't really stand out to me, but I felt very bad for him it was revealed what happened to him before he died and was sent to pergatory.
Angel Beats is up there amongst the likes of Clannad and Anohana as one of the best emotional dramas, and it's one that I highly recommend checking out.
