In TADD's "While Cross-Dressing, I Was Hit on by a Handsome Guy!" (the original title), we never learn "why" Iori wants to crossdress, or why Hazuki is a tomboy attracted to femme guys. Deep psychology? early trauma? gender politics? all eighty-sixed before chapter one. These people just are, and this is refreshing, because we get to jump right into the common pitfall of dating, worrying about: how assertive we should be; if our words or tone or actions set a bad mood last night; how to appear eager for the next date without pressuring the other person; managing expectations; and learning from your new significant ... other.

The serious fears and worries are given due weight, but it never quite capsizes the fun of dating, and the richest mine of fun is our incompetence at dating itself. The story's shape does not devolve into formula, and the characters progress along very small arcs; no one is "transformed" by the end, but everyone is a little bit different, even if only by seeing their friends in a bit of a new light.

It's yuri, it's hentai... what else to say about it? Well, most importantly: the emotional tone is consistent and real to the characters, which makes the sex following their dialogs that much more realistic and, to be blunt, hot. So what suffers is the plot. Oh, it's realistic enough... it's just insanely compressed to work many lifetimes of sexual encounters into a comic that proceeds "one chapter: one sex scene." It's so noticeable that by chapter 13 the author jokingly compares lesbianism to a contagious disease.

It sounds artificial and trite. And the plot structure, like "Phineas and Ferb," is intentionally limited to variations on a ... single plot dynamic (I won't spoil what it is). But instead of grating with repetition, the dynamic starts to amuse the reader: we see the plot machinery kick into gear and instead of crying, "oh, no!" we think, "here we go again!!" And since the emotional lives of the women are always treated sincerely and sensitively, it all works.

Major Tanya von Degurechaff is no mere isekai MC. Take:
1. an alternate military history of the Great War (WWI) with a science of magic;
2. the secret serial killer/hero from "Dexter";
3. a healthy dose of Chicago school economics; and
4. the (other side’s) religious debate from "A Man For All Seasons" (1966).
Mix well.

Tanya was a Tokyo sarariman in 2013 Tokyo, before he was murdered by a distraught ex-employee, and ended up reincarnating in a world with magic. This nameless sarariman scored as a high functioning Dark Triad personality, one that mixes self-centeredness, no attachment to social morality, and a scheming mind (AKA narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism).

But Tanya is ... not without morals. As a rational, atheistic sarariman, she adopted the Chicago school of economics’ libertarianism for an artificial moral code, just as Dexter in his TV show adopted Harry's Rules, his stepfather's code on how to live as a serial killer without hurting society. But libertarian politics have little application for an Imperial Army officer in a war zone. Tanya, like Kazuma in "Konosuba," is the butt monkey of her own show.

Faced with certain conscription as a magic-capable near-teen, female or not, Tanya enlists in the Imperial Army's officer candidate school, hoping to become a staff officer in the rear. Sadly, Tanya’s creativity, lack of empathy and limitless regard for self-preservation on the front line undermine her long-term rear echelon goal: she becomes a first-rate line officer, gleefully (yet unwillingly!) tearing apart entire enemy units so she may escape with her rank and her skin intact, and becoming indispensable to her superiors at Strategic HQ.

So "Yōjo Senki" becomes half a war comedy like Phil Silvers’ Sergeant Bilko, and half a poignant consideration of the cost of war. It's not for everyone, but for those people it is uniquely magnificent. Oh, and God plays a role, because until God is actively stirring crap up in your life, can you really say the whole world is against you?

By the way, Being X (you’ll see) is not punishing the sarariman. Remember, the sarariman died with no interference from Being X. Instead, Being X has His mind changed (inadvertently) by the (self-admittedly cold, rather uncaring) sarariman, and then reincarnates him in another world.
