The show is about the same as the initial release of the cyberpunk 2077 game, over hyped with lots of garbage and some nice moments thrown in.
From about the point of the third or fourth episode I started to fell like I was waiting for the show to be over, all the way up to the last episode. I might've not finished watching it, but I decided to give it a fair shot and save my judgement till the end due to how many people told me how amazing it was. TO BE CLEAR, I really wanted to like the show, and I felt like
...
I really gave it an honest try. I was really hoping it was going to be one of those shows that just starts out slow and then really reels you in by the last few episodes. It was not.
I think most of the problems stem from poor story writing and choice of studio. I like Trigger, but their style is more of a goofy sloppy type with lots of bright colors, which does not work well with how serious this show is meant to be. The bright colors they like to use went well with the aesthetic of a cyberpunk city well, but for most other things it only did the show a disservice. The story was pretty boring for the most part and the character development was really jumpy for a lot of the characters with certain characters flip flopping the way they act and feel every other minute. Their relationships also didn't progress in a logical way for the most part. There were two or three touching moments, but with the poor story telling and character development I ended up not caring when I normally would have.
One of the few saving graces for this show was the voice acting. The English voice crew did a phenomenal job, and it was entirely because of them that the touching moments in the show made me feel anything as there were often things like the facial expressions on the characters that usually felt strange for a given scene. I don't know how else to describe the faces other than that they felt off. However, as I said before the voice acting was fantastic, and if I was rating just that I would give the show a nine or a ten. But unfortunately other aspects of the show prevent me from doing so.
It was honestly a bit fun seeing that they recreated many aspects of the game in the show such as the city layout and a lot of the weapon and vehicle designs. The music for instance was largely taken from the game. I would expect doing those sort of things saved them time and effort in creating those things from scratch, but I would've liked to see them use the extra resources they may have saved in making the story and animation choices better.
I thought the into and outro music and art was well done and was enjoyable enough to me that I didn't feel like I wanted to skip them. Some people are saying they couldn't stand the intro, but I thought it was decent. The outro was definitely more enjoyable for me though as it felt like it was more emotional and carried more weight to it.
A lot of people are saying the show saved the game, but I just don't understand how that can be. I played the game and had a lot of fun, so I believe they deserve to be saved in some way, but saying the show did that because of how good it is sounds like complete nonsense to me. What that seems like to me is simply people being way too willing to mindlessly jump aboard the hype bandwagon and allow themselves to be blinded by the pier pressure. To me this is the same situation as the Twilight series craze which was hugely popular for a long time until the hype died down and people started coming to their senses and realizing what a hot pile of garbage it was. Even the Twilight movies had a few decent moments. This is nothing special.
