I don't know why people like this show, it was one of the most bland uninteresting and boring shows of 2020. Everything about this show comes from somewhere else and when the show is doing something new it is uninteresting.
The main character is the same perfect yet perverted protagonist we see in so many rom coms and the lead girl is a hand made made perfect girl made to appeal to the majority no matter who you are who is strong and fierce but also is easily embarrassed and has a cute side, as well as being underage, all the things anime fans just
...
seem to love.
They go through the usual slice of life setlist including bathing episode, trip episode and summer festival episode. Disappointingly for many fans, there is no beach episode so they couldn't see their underage female in a swimsuit. Something to look forward to in the future I guess.
While I'm on the topic of bland and unoriginal, we can talk about the art style which is the most generic thing I've seen in a while with many of the characters being coloured in some of the most putrid colours the artists could have picked for a pallet making the show feel rather cheap. In fact the entire show feels incredibly cheap with many of the backgrounds feeling like the pulled them out of the bottom of the anime background stock images barrel.
Overall this show is inoffensive at best with other rom-coms from this year like Love is War S2 and Kano-Kari doing far better jobs for romantic comedies this year. I could only hope that this show is only a blip on the anime radar never to be heard from again but basing off how popular this show has been this season we will likely be seeing this again within the next couple of years.
This show and its surprising popularity have led me to the conclusion that anime fans are so deprived of female attention that any show about some loser where a beautiful girl loves this loser unconditionally will receive high praise from the anime community at large. Anime studios may as well just start catering to incels in order to find easy success in future.

I'm not a basketball fan or even a sports fan in general, but take my word when I say Slam Dunk is my favourite manga series of all time. The pure joy I get reading as well as just thinking about this series is overwhelming.
Yet you don't need me to sing the praises of this series, anyone who's even touched this series knows of its greatness. It's art, it's characters, it's plot, all areas where this plot excels like no other series. For instance the plot...the amount of times I stood up out of excitement while reading this series feeling the pure, undiluted hype of
...
this series with the most tense moments of the series being unbearable. Not many manga series get an actual reaction out of me but Slam Dunk succeeded many a time.
Next the art. Not often do you see an artist who can capture motion in still images like Inoue does. With details like the sweat steadily increasing as matches go on. The way that every character was unique in their head shapes, hair and body types. The intense eye for detail, for instance how sweat droplets increase steadily as the match goes on.
The characters are a weaker area with some characters not getting quite as fleshed out as I would've liked. Yet I still enjoyed every character and how each one bounced off the others creating a beautifully chaotic group dynamic that was a joy to watch. One of my favourite examples being the bond between Sakuragi and Miyagi, with their shared goals and likeness making for wholesome little idiot duo.
I could absolutely gush about every inch of this series all day. When I read this first, I absolutely devoured and savoured every scratch of pen marking as I tore through this series. I hope that someday I will enjoy a manga series as much as this one.
If there was one problem for me, it would be that I liked the series too much and that I didn't want it to end.

When I started watching this show weekly I thought I was absolutely gonna loath it, purely based off the name, I thought it was gonna be a pretty looking show with a absolutely garbage plot. Now a few months later with the show finished, I have become a fan of a show called "Rent a Girlfriend".
If there's one thing this show did really well it was the characters, which I know was a major turn off for a lot of people especially when it comes to Kazuya. Yet I am a lover of protagonists that are shitty or flawed in a human way which Kazuya
...
is. I feel I know people just like Kazuya, maybe not people who would do something a few steps away from hiring a prostitute, but someone who consistently has struggled in his love life and is emotionally immature. His emotions of inadequacy were quite relatable. I sympathise with many viewers' frustration with him and his actions constantly digging himself deeper, even when you think he's hit rock bottom, but I found this an entertaining and didn't mind it.
This realistic characterisation passes onto a lot of the side characters as well with many of of the characters feeling like actual people I have met particularly Mizuhara and Mami. Mizuhara being a mature, straight forward person who is soft when she needs to be but can become candid when needs be, perfect for the person to rehabilitate our main character into being a regular functioning human being. Mami on the other hand being a manipulative and jealous in all the ways she needs to be to be the defacto villain of the series. Despite this villainous position she is never outright evil which is why she gets under peoples skin with her façade of friendliness masking her seething contempt. I could go far more in depth with these character descriptions.
It's not very often I am able to come up with these in depth descriptions for characters even for shows I like and I think this is what won me over, how invested I got in these characters. There are some characters that are nice little additions not yet quite developed like Best Girl Ruka and the just precious Sumi, but I see them both getting further development in later parts of the series. Smaller pieces like Kazuya's Grandmother and his friends are characters that I am also looking forward to being part of the show not that they necessarily need development, just that I like what they add to the show and I already know how they tick as characters.
Outside of this main area of glory I think that the plot was enjoyable and that everything looked very nice and clean in the art as well as the Op and the second Ed made their way to my playlist as some of my most listened songs.
In short I enjoyed this show far more than I should have, you'll catch me reading the manga and I'll see you all next year for season 2. Ruka's Best Girl 8/10.

Watching this show on a weekly basis was awful. I watched it out of obligation to myself as I don't like leaving shorter shows unfinished as well as the feeling that if I don't watch a show I dislike to completion then I didn't give it a full chance so shouldn't dismiss it. Yet I still watched it on a weekly basis.
Now why did I dislike it. The reason is that overall it was just bad. The quality of the look of the show was cheap looking and lacking in any colour. The characters I found to be bland or annoying, particularly Uzaki herself being
...
unbelievably loathsome with the only enjoyable part of her being her tits and nothing else. The story went nowhere which was not really necessary for a slice of life show but I feel like there was the aim of making this partly a romance but no progress was made on that front making it feel like a huge waste of time that they even tried to add that subplot.
The thing I least liked about this show was the debate and defence of the show. This show was attacked because apparently Uzaki's proportions are unrealistic which I disagree with. The reason people should've been attacking this show because of it's low quality not because some anime girl's tits are too big otherwise most shows would be controversial.
I did not see enough hate for this show, only praise for "pissing off the libs and feminists" when I saw people shit on decent or pretty good shows like Kano Kari or just sleep on shows like Olympias Kyklos cos there were no thicc anime bitches.
The fact that this is getting a second season is infuriating. The money that they're pouring into another season of this shitty knock-off of Nagatoro could be directed towards manga that deserve an anime (Chainsaw Man, Komi San, Spy x Family) or anime that need another season (NGNL, Stone Ocean, Konosuba, etc) but instead we're getting this to feed some fucking losers' on the internets short stacked girl fetish.
So yeah, fuck this show.

Just a good time. I'm enjoying just having a few minutes a week to watch this. I believe if I had waited till it finished I would've been sick of it but watching it in small doses is great and adds to the fast paced comedy.
The comedy is not really to my taste but I don't laugh at a lot of things so I know it's doing a decent job when it has me grinning from ear to ear.
The stop motion animation was refreshing to see and really elevated the show in my opinion.
It's kinda infuriating this doesn't have a higher rating
...
and is some how beaten by a bland and unfunny sack of shit like Uzaki Chan this season despite the quality between the two being night and day.
I feel the passion of the studio who worked behind it and I hope to see more like this in the future.
