Why watch it? above average entertainment quotient. nostalgic animation style.
Why skip it? glorification of violence and violent terrorists, absent father. child predation. selfish and annoying main character. plotholes. frustrating justification of evil. incoherent plot.
This anime is peak example of why I don't like the idea of animanga gaining more popularity around the world especially among boys (whom it's intended for). No way HxH is meant for young boys. It's full of adult themes, violence and gore. The way the show builds up hype for a failed/absent father who's not only an arsehole human but also tries everything to avoid any accountability that comes
...
with parenthood (should've used a condom?). He subjects his almost orphaned son to endless trials and torture (that author tries to portray as "tough" parenting) but it's just plain old child abuse of insane proportions. No clue about his mother because shonen boys are birthed out of their dad's rectum apparently. There's also glorification of pedophilia.
Hunter exams are a big joke. It's ridden with cheating, plot holes and inconsistencies. One year, you get strong hunters like Hisoka, Gittarackur, and Hanzo all in one exam, then the following year, Killua is conveniently assigned weak af opponents and a laughable victory at 4x speed just so the author can continue with Greed Island arc. There's no benchmark or proper criteria as to how they pass the exams. The chairman is one of the biggest idiotic clowns in HxH. He keeps meddling in the exam and the examiners' decision-making process. What tf is the point of examiners then? I won't even go into detail about how the final exam went down. Gon's victory was practically handed to him because his rival showed him mercy. There's clear signs of hypnosis when Killua loses the fight to Gittarackur but the chairman doesn't care. Now, given that passing Hunter exams grants you an insane amount of wealth and influence in this world, you'd think there'd be a governmental authority to prevent criminals from becoming hunters and wreaking havoc? But no. The Hunter association don't bear any accountability either. The power system with Nen is full of flaws.
There's senseless violence and gore for shock value. The way HxH deals with human morality is laughable and cringe. Phantom troupe that get crazy amounts of plot armour in every arc (for no reason?) are filthy murderers but they are shown as innocent souls worthy of sympathy in the end. Same happens when Gon feels sorry for the mass murderer Genthru who killed 100s of hunters. Instead of using it on Killua, Gon wastes a super rare ability to heal Genthru after nearly being beaten to death by the same guy. (great logic Togashi *slow claps*). That whole kidnapping situation with Chrollo proves that Kurapika didn't have enough resolve to fight the Phantom troupe. This contradicts the logic of Kurapika gaining all those strong Nen powers because of his strong resolve to take revenge against the troupe. They should've at least shown him defeating the troupe leader but no. Terrible writing strikes again. Finally there's these big human eating alien 'ants' that jump out of nowhere and the HxH world faces a big existential threat. They look like everything but ants - bird, cheetah, owl etc. Also they are magically born with the power to see Nen (no one knows why!) and have more powerful hunter abilities than the actual hunters just bc they ate some? lmao?? With the hunter organization getting involved and everything, you'd think they'd bring in veteran pro hunters to fix the mess?? Oh no. They'd rather make two weak, immature kids fight another pair of weak, emotionally stunted menchildren to fight the final boss. The author pretends that veteran pro Hunters don't even exist in this entire arc. That melodramatic ending with ant king x runny nose girl's "love story" is just another bizarre variant of villain endings the author has a fetish for. Gon's final reunion with his homeless burglar looking father is probably the biggest disappointment in this clusterfuck of a shonen. The chairman election arc is better off not existing at all. I don't know what's in store for HxH's future but it's better off not getting any more seasons for its own good.

Overall pretty mediocre for such a high rated anime. The beginning seems promising but it soon fumbles and drags on till the end. Mashiro is one of the most unlikeable MCs. His character is way too arrogant and narcissistic for you to empathize with his journey. Takagi is another generic sidekick with no personality of his own other than being an MC asslicker. Takagi is supposed to be the main writer here and yet you see Mashiro often going off on his own, lashing out against his only "friend" for the most foolish reasons. Except for a corny childhood fantasy of a future marriage, there's
...
no real passion driving their day-to-day grind to become a mangaka. The side characters are as generic as the main ones. There's not a hint of 'comedy' except for a few sequences involving Kaya who's probably the only normal character in this show. Their kiddy romance is forced. Takagi and Mashiro both have awful personalities to even get girlfriends, let alone marriage proposal.
While the concept was fresh, there's not enough deep dive into how these "geniuses" managed to juggle both school and a serious career like that of a fiction writer/mangaka that requires full time attention not just physically but also mentally. Even coming up with solid ideas takes months of brainstorming unlike what is supposedly happening here. The editor Hattori is way too unrealistic/kind for them to grab hold of in one go. I don't even want to comment on what's happening with their forced eccentric "genius" character Niizuma. The op/ed songs are again very dull and hence very fitting for this anime.

Cringe "comedy" in a nutshell except there's nothing in there that's even remotely remarkable enough to make you laugh or even giggle. Instead, you get a narcissist and self obsessed male main character (whose name sounds like Kanye; how very fitting), ultra cringe pervy male side characters, sexist/cheesy dialogues, forced vulgar jokes, typical sexually objectified and intellectually challenged female characters, nonsensical/boring/bland plot and storytelling. Basically an anime that'd appeal to low IQ/EQ (male) weebs.
I couldn't finish the whole thing so you get the gist.
P.S. Why does one need write an entire PhD thesis as an anime review to be accepted by MAL?

I saw this based solely on the cover image and god tf did I just watch?..kept waiting for the cops to arrest the ugly fat pedo main character Koshiro (but that never happens in Japan, does it?). In short, child sexual grooming, incest, and pedophilia glorified to look like some aesthetic SoL romance. His co-worker man is a kid diddler too whos always dreaming of incest and having s*x with high school girls. the other co-worker Chidori is the only sane (ofcourse it's a woman) in the show who somehow doesn't report this shit to the police even after knowing the truth in the end.
...
It's disgusting how such an anime is allowed to be released to public, let alone get a 7 rating. The mangaka is most probably a pedophile too..despicable shit.

1. This wasn't needed after s1. It's stupid comedy masquerading as psychological genre.
2. Kaiji is a fucking moron. He keeps making the same mistakes and expect us to feel pity for his sorry ass. Nobody is this retarded.
3. The narrator is damn annoying. Not only does he take the audience for fools but also spoil some scenes before they even happen.
4. There's no character you want to root for except for Miyoshi.
5. After dragging it on for what seems like an eternity, the show ends abruptly and leaves us hanging without a proper ending.
If you want to feel frustrated and annoyed, go watch this.
...
There are better alternatives out there.

I had a hard time understanding why this anime is so popular and the fact that a woman wrote it. The movie has no idea what message it is trying to convey other than encouraging harmful ableist and misogynist stereotypes and tropes, such as: bullying victims are incapable of rage?? girls are dumb and think stalking and bullying is rOmAnTiC?? bullies should be forgiven and pitied just because they faced karma for being pieces of shit?? The male MC is creepy enough as it is, the side characters are just as annoying and make you want to punch them through the screen.
Do better Yoshitoki Ōima.

The beautiful animation drew me in the instant I started the first episode but ofcourse the animanga industry can't live without their favorite trope of romanticizing pedophilia/sexual abuse/cheating/harassment in the name of cOmEdy.
While every single anime I've seen till now has had this problematic issue (It makes you wonder if this reflects Japanese culture in general how they view women and children over there!) but this one takes the cake, it's kinda hard to ignore when the MC itself is the PoS and it's a consistent central theme throughout the show.
I'm pretty sure the only people who can like such crap are either closet
...
pedophiles and rape apologists and it's appalling when you see it has around 8.3x rating with more than 300,000 votes on mal itself.
The popularity of these kind of anime just proves right all the stereotypes hurled at 'weebs' aka anime fans in general, and while I do count myself as a fan, I do realize a huge majority of these "weebs" are fucked up weirdos IRL.
