Tokyo Revengers: a simple anime about timetravelling, or is it?

Full disclaimer: I started watching the anime, switched to the manga because I found the story interesting, read the latest chapter, and am now watching the story again during recent episodes.

Due to the fact that I read the manga so recently, I will compare the anime with the manga, but will also review the anime seperately. TL;DR: The story is losing its pace as the episodes go on; the art doesn't have a lot of details and features a lot of still-shots; and several VAs & BGMs were a bit poorly-chosen, but the characters and actual ... plot are still good enough to make it an enjoyable anime.

Story - 7
The plot of togrev is that Takemichi (the MC) discovers that he can timetravel to exactly 12 years in the past, and aims to save his (only) ex-girlfriend by joining the delinquent gang Tokyo Manji (Toman). While this may sound cliché or boring, this idea is worked out extremely well with a lot of interesting plottwists that do make sense but are unpredictable. The anime, to its credit, follows the plot of the manga exactly, but its pace seems to increasingly slow down. Episode 16 only adapted 2 manga chapters, even though those chapters are 15 pages long. This makes the anime drag quite a bit, although this might be different for anime-onlys.

Art - 5
I dislike the art of the anime. The characters seem sort of similar to their manga designs, but the manga features a lot more detail in their features and the characters' noses are weirdly long in side-profile? I also feel the colours are just a little bit too saturated to look pleasing to the eye. Besides that, the animation occasionally feels a little stale with a lot of still frames.

Sound - 7
I adore the OP song Crybaby (although the visuals are a bit meh), the ED is not my fave although still passable, and I like most of the VAs. Especially the VAs of the main characters are well picked and do an amazing job. Again however, the VAs picked for some of the recent characters (especially Baji from ep14 or 15 and Chifuyu from ep 17) do not match so well. They have heavy adult voices (especially Baji) while they have to play 13-15 year olds. This contrast is especially visible when they are in a scene with one of the VAs with a younger voice (such as Takemichi's) and I found it rather distracting. Also some of the BGM tracks do not fit that well for the scene they are chosen for, which also leads to a less pleasant viewing experience.

Character - 9
Togrev has a set of amazing characters who get increasingly more and more depth and feel like actual people. While some of the emotional moments are a bit ruined by the artstyle and BGM, my love for the characters has not decreased at all.

Enjoyment - 6
Due to the slow pace of a story I already knew, the mediocre art and debatable BGM, I occasionally struggled with enjoying the anime. The characters often managed to pull it back for me however, so this segment gets a 6.

Overall - 7
The anime overall is a faithful adaptation of the manga, but the things I mentioned previously do detract both from the story and characters. I am not sure whether an anime-only watcher will have quite the same hang-ups as myself, but I would highly recommend at least checking out the manga if you think the story is interesting!

Mixed Feelings

I stumbled upon this manga through the Youtuber "The Anime Man", and I kind of regret reading it.

Story 5/10

The story starts off being kind of childish, with silly orders, although the orders quickly become difficult to follow. While the story does become interesting at some points, sometimes there are lulls, in which the same information is repeated over and over again, which can get really annoying. The pacing is just awful, since the manga starts off at an extremely slow pace, but in the latter chapters, a lot is happening at once, almost too much for a reader to really follow.
