I don't know how I finished this show; this is the lowest I've ever rated a show since Kanokari. These two are similar as they both have bright colors, pretty character design but terrible plots. Kanokari just gets worse past the first season while CotE is terrible within the first season.
When I went into this I thought it would be like Kakegurui, as that was another show I watched whereas in school ranking was determined by somewhat mind games. CotE has better world building, but it is just not good. Most of the time, the plot is "boys being perverts" but the female characters are

I agree with other people when they say that this manga really drops after Ch ~30. So I'll split my review into two parts.
Up to and Before Vol 7: I found Rio & Yuna's story to be mid (however interesting). Kazu was just like not a character, IMO the only person with a geniune character arc/traits is Yuna. Yuna is also so cute, like all the art is really pretty, but her and Agatsuma's character designs are probably my favorites. It's a super cliche shojo story but I like that kinda stuff. After Vol 7: Akari/Kazu were progressing at around the same rate as Yuna/Rio, but once ...

I have actual beef with this series. WHAT was that ending. What was that Future volume. I gazed at my shelf for many days thinking that the Future volume was about the lives of the characters of Orange after they rescued Kakeru. And I thought that was brilliant, because the whole problem and what they are trying to change is that Kakeru never HAD a Future. Instead, they save him and the series just. Ends. And then there's a whole 'nother volume about a timeline that was supposed to be changed? What was the point of the original series, then?

I tried reading this series when I first read Fruits Basket in 2020, and I just found it really boring. So when I went into it this time, I prepared myself. However, I was actually pleasantly surprised! There is LITERALLY no plot. Like I am not kidding, it's kinda impressive.
I don't totally suggest you read this series. It's really disappointing in terms of potential. None of the original characters show up again, which is dumb. This is a really good manga, but it caused me so much pain that I had no idea was gonna happen. It's not marketed as a dark tragedy but it IS, especially after Shibuya (and I read that arc in one sitting with no idea when it would end).
I really need to research these things before all my favorite characters just die/suffer greatly out of nowhere. ______ In other news, the manga doesn't carry most of the things that make the anime so likeable.
