I would not hesitate in calling this the greatest piece of literature of all time. Everything from the story, to the atmosphere, to the characters, to the comedy is perfect. Everything comes together perfectly.
What makes the manga/anime so entertaining in the first place is the dichotomy between the two loveable and fun loving main characters and the dire situation they are in. The manga never shies away from reminding you that the two are the last people on Earth, and that they will likely die, but they are just trying their best to survive. At the same time, the manga constantly shows the two girls

arguing, fighting, or joking around with each other. Some of the best parts of the manga and anime are the sentimental moments strung into the anime, like the rainwater song where they used tin cans to make sounds when the rain hit the cans.
On the topic of sentimental moments, my favorite moment in this manga (other than the ending), and just my favorite moment in any piece of fiction period is when the girls visit a museum. They look around for a bit at the statues and paintings but then they stumble upon a Neanderthal cave painting. They gander for a bit at it, and they decide to take a paper from one of Chiito's book to make a drawing and hang it up next to the cave painting. The first of man's art and the last of man's art next to each other. It really is a beautiful chapter. But, it doesn't top the ending.
For the final few chapters of the manga, the girl's trip to the very top layer is put into top gear. The entirety of the final few chapters follows the girls as they try to reach the top. On the way, their trusty car breaks down, but they're smart enough to use it as a bath. Later, they find a seemingly endless staircase to the top layer and begin their ascent. On the way, they have to burn Chiito's books to build a fire to keep warm.
On the way to the top, in other words, they had to let go of practically everything. They used up most of their food, Chiito had to burn all of the books she'd been collecting, and their car that they were using to get around and store their things had broken. In an almost literal sense, all they had was each other.
Once they reach the top, they gander at the beauty of the sky and of the stars. After, they have a snowball fight. Once they're done, they once again gander at the beauty of everything, as well as reflect on how they are the final things living on the entire Earth. One thing is clear though, they still have each other. Simply, they accept their death together. There's nothing more to fight for. They've done all they wanted to do, and they are happy. And they are happy to be together for their final moments.
There's one small chapter at the very end where it zooms out from the girls laying on the top layer, and shows how insignificant and alone they really are. The note at the end of the chapter is really heartwarming too. I think this is possibly the most beautiful ending to a piece of media ever.
Simply put, this manga is a genuine masterpiece. Everything from the themes of the anime, to the way they handle those themes is perfect. I'm so sad the manga ended the way it did, but there was no better way to end it
