I watched this series years ago, but I decided to write a review now because I recently read the novel. I already thought the anime was terrible, but reading the novel made me realize that the anime is even worse than I originally thought.
Animation:
The animation is pretty much the only truly good thing about Another. It's detailed and the style fits the overall tone of the series. It still holds up a decade later.
Sound:
The background music is ok, but not terribly memorable. The opening and ending themes are decent.
I watched the English dub version. Most of the voice acting was decent, but the protagonist,
...
Koichi, was miscast in my opinion.
Characters:
Most of the characters are completely forgettable, this is because most of them only exist to die. Of course, their deaths have no impact because they have little to no personality. Kouichi and Mei are the only slightly memorable characters, but they aren't interesting or likable enough to carry the show.
Plot:
This is the biggest flaw of the series. The first half of the show does a decent job of setting up the mystery, however, the second half of the show completely falls flat. The characters make one ridiculously stupid decision after another, making it increasingly difficult to take the story seriously. By the end, the characters' decisions become so nonsensical that the series almost turns into a comedy.
Now it's time to talk about the book. Having just recently finished reading it, I was shocked to see that many of the plotholes and dumb decisions in the anime were nonexistent in the novel. This isn't a case of the writers running out of source material and being forced to create a new ending for the anime. The book is only one volume (two, if you count the paperback release) so the source material was already complete by the time the anime was made. I have absolutely no idea why the writers of the anime decided to change the story so that nothing made sense and turn all of the characters into complete morons. It's baffling, and also the reason I decided to write this review. If anyone is interested in this series, I beg you to just read the novel and ignore this complete dumpster fire of an anime.
