I’ve never written an anime review before, but Mushoku Tensei frustrated me so much that I had to speak up. It’s honestly such a shame because the beginning of the season was really good. The animation is breathtaking, and there are so many emotional moments that really hit hard. But as the story went on, I couldn’t ignore the problems: Especially how badly it treats its female characters.
The biggest issue for me is how sexist it is. Almost every female character is stuck in a supporting role for the men. Even characters who start off strong and independent, like Roxy, end up being sidelined. She’s
...
supposed to be this amazing mentor, but later on, she’s just another love interest for Rudeus and only he can bring her happiness by marrying her.
Sylphiette is even worse. She’s rescued by Rudeus, molded into his “ideal woman,” and then agrees with everything he says. She has no real independence. She was only on the same level with Rudeus when she was Fitts, a dude. And Eris? Sure, she trains to become stronger, but only because she wants to “catch up” to Rudeus. Why can’t she just grow for herself?
The cheating with Roxy is the final straw
What really made me drop the show was the betrayal with Roxy. Rudeus cheats on Sylphiette with her, and the whole thing is handled so poorly. Roxy ends up being the one blamed while Rudeus’ actions are brushed off as “just him being a pervert.” Both are wrong for that.
It’s the same justification the show uses for Paul, Rudeus’ father, who’s also a serial cheater. The narrative constantly excuses this behavior because “they’re just like that,” while the women are expected to forgive and move on. It’s infuriating and completely ruined Roxy’s character for me.
Also that depression and grief can be cured by a new love interest/sex??? That's just straight up bs, everyone who had a loved one go can understand. Grief never really leaves you and you will feel shit for a long time.
Uncomfortable Relationships
On top of that, the show’s relationships are uncomfortable to watch. Rudeus, who mentally is an adult, views Sylphiette and Eris, both very young girls, in a romantic or sexual way. The story tries to play this off as part of his “flawed personality,” but it never really condemns him for it. Instead, it just keeps normalizing his behavior. I was like: Ok, at least they are the same age in the new world??? 2nd chance ???But it is still icky.
Final Thoughts
It is sooo realistic thooo: No it isn't.
Don't read or watch it if you don't like it: I won't anymore. I had high hopes that were crushed.
You are like Norn: Yes and she gets groomed as well.
It’s honestly disappointing because Mushoku Tensei had so much potential. The animation is stunning, the emotional moments are empathetic, and the worldbuilding is very interesting. But the way it handles its female characters ruined it for me.
The betrayal with Roxy was the final straw. If the story treated women with more respect and gave them real independence, it could’ve been a masterpiece. Instead, it leans into outdated, sexist tropes and keeps excusing toxic male behavior. It reminds me of the Hentai author Asanagi.
I’ve dropped it, and I don’t think I’ll be picking it back up next season. It's just gonna be pissing me off more. It’s such a waste of what could have been a fantastic anime.
