If you were confused after watching season 1 and don't know if you should continue watching this, I'd say it's not worth it unless you have a lot of free time in your hands.

Ok so I watched season 1 and thought it was pretty good, nothing amazing but it got to the point I was hoping for it to get to: Rin facing satan.
I have to admit that after I found out that all of that was basically anime original it made a lot of sense since it was really rushed, it went 0 to 100 in very few episodes. But
...
it wasn't a mess.
Although the character development was deeper in this "timeline" I don't think that necessarily means better, because this is obviously meant to be more, this is merely an arch, I know, but it feels like the plot moved sideways rather than forward.
It felt really slow-paced and every little thing was dragged on for too long, it felt like the main story in itself was ok, but that self-discovery of Yukio was just confusing. I guess I can understand his feeling but this was all taken too far and at the same time they didn't resolve a thing.
This attempt at making it seem more real (I guess) turned out to dissolve the magic of fiction and completely ruin the whole idea of building up tension. The Yukio questioning himself while fighting this ridiculously powerful and sudden villain, parallel to Rin switching from being scared to death to saying some trivial thing while laughing and all while still, STILL not being able to draw the fucking sword is what bothered me and completely destroyed any progress this could've had.
What I mean by making it seem more real is that in that situation it makes sense for Rin to be scared, he is 15 years old, and in reality, seeing your friends in danger may not always be enough to get you going. And with Yukio too, it doesn't make sense for him to be able to defeat Todo or to keep a deaf ear to his words.
...But I'm watching this to see the power of friendship or some shit, not reality. To build up tension you need hesitation, but there's a limit and a time for the viewer to think for A SECOND that everything is lost, not for like 5 EPISODES, it was at least 8 times that I just thought "why are they still there? just die already" because apparently there wasn't anything they could've done.
There are ways to appeal to reality, but this is not one, it clearly backfired.
Story: 6
So I kinda said all I needed about this above.
Art: 7
It wasn't bad, the mobility was good, the characters were consistent and all the fight scenes looked okay. I think it's alright as long as I don't notice anything wrong with it as I'm watching. It wasn't the best art ever, but I wouldn't know what else to ask for. The only thing is that Yukio looked way hotter and consistent in the first season, comparing it to that, the animation was a bit off.
Sound: 8
It was good, no complaints. Also, the op and ed were good, not memorable and way more dramatic than the other ones, but they were good.
Characters: 7
Ok, I said above what I didn't like, but other than that it was good, the way their friendship grew was really wholesome, even though everything was dragged for too long it turned out ok, except for that whole weird vibe between the brothers. There were a lot of awkward and frustrating moments, but that made the end all the more cute and heartwarming, so I'll look past it because it seems like it worked there.
Enjoyment:
Failed to build up tension correctly and failed to make it seem more real resulting in something that didn't get too far. Despite that, the general idea of the story was well thought and I was still curious about how it would turn out, which kept me hooked. More than a case of "I need the next episode now" it was like "I guess I don't have anything else to do"
TL;DR: this was dragged on, the character development was weird regarding the brothers but it turned out okay in every other aspect, the story in general still holds potential but it failed to build up tension, that plus a lot of other little things made it difficult to watch.
Hopefully, it rises up from here because at this point I just don't know if it went downhill, stood still or prepared to advance forward with the main plot.

This contains spoilers but if you're looking to see if it's worth watching, then yes, absolutely.
Well, I don't know what I expected, maybe it was that it had a really high score or that I'd read the name countless times, but the fact that this was ultimately a story about emotions and what a human is capable of doing because of them rather than an exploration of time travel was, disappointing? Again it's my fault for trying to guess where it was going just to find out it was gonna be all about one time loop. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed this very much, ... |
