This is not a story about vampires. This is a story about humans.
First shiki are seen as the monsters, but during the story we seriously start to doubt this conclusion. Actually, the boundaries between humans and the fictional shiki become more and more thinner during the series till they disappear in the end.
The plot is based on the variety of characters. There are no to fully developed ones. The purpose is to show more sides of the human nature. All the reactions of the village people are different, but there is something very similar among them. This brings a lot of
...
realism to the story. Similar things happened during the middle ages in Europe, the hunting the so called "witches".
Actually, the animation flows on the top of deep waters. This theme is touched widely in the literature, but not so in the animation. The bases of the "Monster" is the same, but it's based on the developing of the main characters.
If you expect something similar to the other animes, films, and even books about vampires ( Twilight for example), you'll be disappointed. This story is much deeper and will leave you with philosophical and sad thoughts during the nights.
Very nice music and the style of the art fits with the theme.
