Aside from the animation, everything else feels super amateurish.
The writing especially; the dialogue feels like it was written by someone who has watched anime and nothing else. It really feels like everyone says what they say and act the way they do because 'that's what it's like in anime'.
This short reminded me of Miyazaki's issue with the current anime industry, where now, the people who are making the anime are people who grew up on anime, and so are replicating what this 'anime community' has deemed the norm, instead of trying to create something wholly original.
As I said
...
right at the beginning, the only real merit I can give to this short is the stupendously well crafted animation, and the presentation in general. Poppy, vibrant colors, both cute and cool character designs, and fun, energetic movements.
I'd say give it a watch just for the sake of the presentation. It's only 26 minutes.
This is a Japanese person reviewing this by the way.

Before I start, I wanna say I have not read death note, but I love Bakuman.
The primary problem with this manga is it is disinteresting and dull.
The protagonist is probably a prime example of this. The has no real interesting motivation or any drive to do so. He just sort of gets dragged into everything. During the first chapter, we get the idea that he is somewhat of a lonely, awkward kid, but all that is brushed off after chapter 3 or so, then he becomes kind of just a dull slate who reacts to things I guess.
This dullness is also
...
reflected in the female lead. again, she also is kind of a blank slate who reacts to things in a way you'd expact a girl to, I guess. We really have no idea who or what she is because she doesn't talk that much anyway, and doesn't really have a significant role in the plot other than the fact that she is a god candidate and needs to be protected by the protag.
A character named Nanato (the only name I remember) is a fairly interesting character. A hell of a lot more than the other two anyway. He has stakes and a clear motivation as to what he is doing. He is also the only one who has any sense of humor at all.
The central concepts of having god candidates is boring too. When a goddess possesses you, you are able to receive either wings or arrows as your power. If the angel is high class enough, you can have both to begin with. If you kill another candidate, you gain their powers. Now, wouldn't it be interesting if all the powers that each candidate had were different? Isn't it an interesting power struggle to see which god candidates have powers to your liking and then attacking them? Maybe smart planning can lead to being pretty much invincible. But no, we just get extra rings on your arms and necks. Great.
Another weird thing about this manga is the edginess. Now, I'm not saying it's inherently bad or anything, but it's just odd to have edginess happen without any real reason. Chapter one shows our main character trying to commit suicide. That doesn't really reflect or add upon who we see him has later as a blank slate at all, so why bother with it? Somewhere around chapter 5 a little girl dies. No real impact on the characters in post or anything really. It's needless edge. It really doesn't to be there.
One more point to rag on about. The concept of god used in this world. Mirai Mikki fucked concept up even worse, but PE doesn't handle it in the most effective way either. These stories are lovecraftian by nature; it deals with the inevitable and unchangable decision of an ascended being. Way to go, ruining it by showing god and heaven. Lovecraftian horror is the horror of constantly being watched over by beings and deities that we have no control over, perhaps we are not even aware of it. Just think of how terrifying it would have been to know that the god in the world of PE is an omnipresent, omnipotent being who can make these horrifying death games happen at the click of his fingers, or, even more scary, just by a single thought. Is it just for his own amusement? Does he even genuinely want god candidates? We will never know, because the thoughts of gods are completely beyond our comprehension.
Goddamn it. You know, I started writing this as a 6 but it went down to a 5 the more I thought about it. Maybe it isn't such a great idea to 'write my feelings down' or whatever.

This is great. Haven't read to end, but it's great.
It has Hirokoshi Kohei's method of writing in which the chapters are fast paced and super dense, which the first chapter suffers from, since we don't get enough character and world building. There are also some tonal issues within that first chapter, in particular, where the prince dies. The art presents this as a kind of shocking and disturbing scene, as we are shown in gross detail of his arm and head being blown off. The main character reacts to this in a way completely antithetical to how the audience feels (in a 'comedic'
...
way), resulting in confusion and being somewhat dragged out of the experience, since we're not quite sure how we're supposed to feel. Though, this is solved by the end and in its subsequent chapters since it is able to separate its comedic and serious moments.
The story has a theme of family, and so has that signature optimistic and happy feeling that it so prevalent in Academia. The story does suffer also from this, because this manga is more story focused, rather than being character focused, as Academia is, there is much less to the characters themselves and so is less focused on developing them in place of exploring the idea of family. The leads to audiences maybe not caring as much to what happens to the characters.
That being said, there certainly is enough character to these characters to make the ride enjoyable, of course, not to the extent of Acedemia. You will still feel the glimpses of the heightened emotional moments found in his next work, which I think still makes this a worthwhile read. It's only 16 chapters. Read it.

***THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS***
Uhm...this movie was kind of weird.
Not that I'm dissapointed in it or anything, just kind of confused.
The first half started out great. It was funny and didn't take itself seriously, like any other Gintama episode. The second half becomes a serious action romp with little to no humor included at all.
Some of these serious parts of the movie was really good, I thought. An example being any scenes in which Otae is sick; especially that scene that lasted one second of her introduction with Kondou's reaction toward her less-than-healthy state.
That second half as I stated was the point where it started
...
getting weird. First thing that confused me was why future Gintoki dressed up as the Enmi figure to begin with. Why? Why did Gin fight each other? What was the point? Just go and tell him "Yo, u gotta go bak in2 da past and kill Me n shit", but no, he waited until present Gin stabbed him in the goddamn chest.
Tama sends present Gin into the past soonafter, and tells him that this is the last time she can send people back to the past. Gin then meets up with Madao and everyone else who somehow knows about Gin even though in the past, we already established that everyone had forgotten about Gin at this point, here, we clearly see they all know who Gintoki is.
This doesn't make sense, since even if Tama DID tell them about the existence of Gintoki, there is a SERVERELY low chance that every single one of them would believe this green haired robot lady of whom they had never met before. And even if they DID believe her about the Gin thing, the scene in the current present day shows her in a completely busted up state, which means that we can consider that this Tama is the same one that sent Gintoki back to the past. That means she shouldn't even have any time jump charges left, since the last one she used was already used on sending Gin back.
The Gin and Otae reunion scene was a pretty weird scene too. For one, this pretty much destroys any emotional stakes we had toward her character is pretty much destroyed. Well, obviously this scene is supposed to be a "Fuck Yeah!" moment that is supposed to make us feel good to see Otae in tip top condition. The problem arises from how there was too small a time span between us seeing her in a sickened state and us seeing her fighting like a badass. If this kanketsu hen was episodic, then yeah, maybe this would have worked since time spans between episodes feel much longer than it would in one long running movie, so it doesn't really work here. Another issue with this scene is that if she came from the timeline in which Gintoki was forgotten, even if within that timeline she accepts Tama's words, there is no way she would remember being sick and bed-ridden, because this is a completely different timeline now. So that exchange of "I thought you where sick in bed" does make any sense whatsoever.
The very ending of this big fight sequence doesn't make much sense either. Past Gin , Katsura, Takasugi and Sakamoto, who assumedly know nothing about altered future Gin and Co. help them without questioning anything.
Look, I get that this movie only really exists to be one last (but not really) hurrah for the Gintama anime and get all the significant characters to get together and do something epic, even if doesn't really make sense, because the purpose of the movie isn't to deliver a tightly written classic for years to come; it's a last spurt of throwing onto the screen whatever it can to make the viewer reminisce of every single Gintama episode that had aired thus far. Is that an excuse for a movie that doesn't make sense? No, not really. For me, anyway. It obviously doesn't for most people as we can see from the extraordinarily high MAL score here.
If time travel bullshit that makes no sense doesn't bother you, then this movie's fully recommended for any Gintama fan. If you're like me, then...you might want to stay away from this one. Especially since there's an anime continuation anyway, so just go and watch the new anime.

SPOILERS
I know I've only watched the first half of the show, but goddamn I feel as though I need to write about it, because I just don't get it.
Well, actually, I kind of did, for the first 5 or so episodes.
The show started off pretty damn nicely, and I've only read a couple of manga chapters, but the pacing of this very first episode was better than the manga equivalent, I thought. Give a question at the beginning of the episode, make us question what it was throughout the episode, and then payoff at the end of the episode by showing us the answer.
I really
...
enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters at first, Shinichi provided the human and moral side of the argument while Migi was the one to give out the pragmatic and logical answers to the situations at hand. This could have given us lots of situations where they are at conflict with one another as to what they should do; the practical or the moral solution.
Everyone else was really boring. Murano didn't really have any characteristics apart from "I'm in love with Shinichi", Yuuko was the "childhood friend" as she put it herself and the Kana girl is the same as Murano, except with even less significance to anything in the plot (Well, she might, but I wouldn't know since I only watched up to episode 12 like I said). There was also the schoolgirl helping out at the hotel that Shinichi stayed in who likes Shinichi no real reason at all. That's 3 girls, two of which who have no reason at all to like him, who like him. And possibly that girl with the ponytail in Murano's class, but I won't count her in.
The story arc with the mother was great. Well, I mean, that was the point where I started questioning the show's true quality as well, but how that arc played out was very well done. After that though, the show's quality DID drop, and it dropped HARD.
The only problem really, is the shift in Izumi's character which kind of came out of nowhere, but had an acceptable explanation for why. Of course I'm talking about the one from episode 8, which I'm going to repeat comes out of absolutely fucking nowhere. There wasn't any sort of transition; it was "I'm grieving" to suddenly "I'm a badass now". I'm going to call this the 'Kaneki effect' (Kaneki from the anime of course, I haven't read the mango so I can't really say), where a formerly wimpy kid becomes super strong quite suddenly, meaning within one episode or possibly two. The reason I'm pissed off is because these kind of characters completely lose what made them the people that they were. Good character development will be gradual, and show the person mature while keeping the person that we once knew intact (e.g. Guts or Musashi) rather than take a complete fucking 180 in character.
This goes against what made the show and two main characters interesting for as well, since as I said, I really loved the dynamic and different ways of thinking Izumi and Migi had. Now that Shinichi is a 'steel skinned badass', it renders the entire character of Migi pointless, and becomes more of a 'user and tool' relationship rather than two separate entities with different thinking processes. This change in character resulted in the show being devoid of any characters that I empathise with in the slightest. I could not care about the show anymore, leading me to dropping it.
The point at which I realized how stupid this show was when the childhood friend character SAW Shimada's head contort AND morph into a completely different head, yet she decided to speak to him because she didn't feel as though it wasn't enough evidence, which lead to many students dying. WHY DID SHE NOT FEEL AS THOUGH SEEING IT WITH HER OWN EYES DIDN'T PROVIDE ENOUGH EVIDENCE AT LEAST FOR HER.
I really don't get this show.

SPOILERS
Didn't start off too amazing. Yato, the main character I found to be a serviceable main character who I didn't find myself too attached to at any point in the series. His character became too inconsistent as the episodes passed, attempting to be both the funny, light hearted cool guy and the brooding badass with a tragic past. It's fine to have a tragic past, just have him be consistent in the present.
Hiyori is pretty boring. I wasn't able to engage with her at all, which isn't helped by the frequent fanservice scenes that include her. There really isn't much to say about her. Even
...
her character design is pretty goddamn boring.
Yukine is probably the only real character that I genuinely liked out of the main cast (except during episodes 6-9 but more on that later). He was a kid, and acted like one (during episodes 2-5 and 10-12). Kaji Yuki seems to have a voice for voicing whiny emo kids, huh?
The first few episodes I thought were fine. Episode 4 is by far the funniest and episode 5 was my personal favorite. Yukine's character arc was the point where the show plummeted in quality. Yukine here was unempathetic and lacking in common sense to a completely unrealistic degree. There was no need for the amount of unpleasantness that was presented here, and so felt extremely contrived. I felt as though the series was forcefully trying to get Yukine to do as many immoral things as possible so that the end of this arc would as 'intense' as possible. He may have lost his memories, but he was still once a human, and is at an age where he would know what is right or wrong. The lack of sympathy he felt when Yato was in pain, saying that 'I'm not to blame' verged on him being a complete sociopath in my mind.
Yato during this arc was also lacking in common sense, since he had told nothing to Yukine about what it means to be a God Instrument (I'm gonna called them 'Shinki' from now on since it's easier) and yet told nothing about the severity of continuous 'stinging' by Shinki and told no one about how bad the impurity was getting. The problem would have been solved a loong time ago if only Yato told Yukine what's going on with him and told the people around what was going on, since they definitely seemed as though they would have been more than happy to help him in any situation. This, again felt like a contrivance the writer made to 'builb up' to the 'pay off' at the end. This Yukine arc, wuite simply put, was complete trash and forced.
This arc was also the time where Bishamon was introduced. A character that I hated as soon as she came on screen. I'm completely biased in saying this, but her character design was ugly as shit. I really hate how she's in a completely unnecessarily in a extremely revealing outfit that when she takes it off her regular outfit covers her up more. Her hair is a really ugly shade of yellow and her purple eyes do not match the hair AT ALL. Enough of her design, more on the character herself. She's supposed to be the badass chick who is supposedly extremely powerful, but failed completely in this regard, since she only relies on her Shinki which she is completely covered in, and so it feels more like she doing none of the work while her gadgets do it all for her.
In this arc, we are also introduced to Daikoku and Kofuku. Nothing much to say here. They are a funny couple and likable. Really nothing to complain about.
The final 3 or so episodes I'd say was generally pretty enjoyable, thankfully. The writer is clearly better at writing shorter and simpler stories, so he doesn't need to weave in forced character actions or coincidences. Well, until the whole 'saved by the power of love' thing anyway. Didn't hate it, but if the face that I didn't hate it is a positive, your series must have been doing pretty badly.
