This show has ruined all other anime for me.
I will always be a bit disappointed, because very few will ever hold a candle up to this masterpiece.
Story ~ 10/10
The story alone is worthy of my "Overall" 10/10 rating. Basically, it is about a self-proclaimed mad scientist and his friends who accidentally make a time machine of sorts. The story follows the consequences of his and others actions. It starts off simple and lighthearted, which was very misleading. I thought it was just a really interesting comedy at first. But as time goes on, it becomes deeper, more complex and really gets you thinking. The
...
complete and total divergence from the initial feeling was important though. Because it is what the story is about at heart; the consequences of curiosity. Steins;Gate never once faltered in it's progression or quality. It maintained a steady pace and a consist story that never once disappointed. I was gripping on to every moment, (each moment prolonged to extreme degrees, thanks to my terrible internet connection) I needed to know what would happen next.
Art ~ 8/10
The artwork was nothing to shout from the mountaintops about, but it got the job done and was eye pleasing. I liked the realistic look at that it had, as a cutesy "typical" anime look would most definitely distract from the story. The atmosphere that it provided was perfect and nothing seemed out of place.
Sound ~ 8/10
Once again, nothing overly fantastic. But what was provided fit every scene extremely well. The opening theme was really great and captured the feeling of the show. (**Kind-of Spoiler**) It basically spelled out everything that was to come in the series. For example, "...That drives my will to go beyond the World Lines, in order to preserve that smile of yours. Once more, into a temporal loop devoid of sorrow..."Thankfully, it really flew over my head (and probably others too), because it made no sense without the context to put it in.
Character ~ 10/10
The characters in Steins;Gate were one of it's driving forces. What is a story without characters that capture your heart? Okabe is our main character, he's a bit delusional and silly, but a good, caring friend nonetheless. Mayuri is so sweet and innocent, you can't help but adore her. Everyone knows a guy like Daru, the perverted tech-geek. And Kurisu "Christina" Makise is the temperamental genius that changes everything. The characters are all written to have realistic actions and reactions. They stay within their character and have very little development. But development was not necessary. The exception is Okabe, who is most definitely changed by his experiences.
Enjoyment ~ 10/10
I've already said it all. I gripped onto every moment of this series. I liked the artwork. The sound was good. I fell so deeply in love with the characters. The story was fantastic and extremely well done, never once did it falter. Even if science-fiction isn't your cup of tea, it is still worth watching. I am normally not much of a fan either. It has everything you could want out of a story of any kind.

At first, I did not think I would like this manga, but I held on because I love the Mangaka's other work. I am so happy that I continued, because this series is incredibly enjoyable!
-Story- 9
The story is very sweet, simple and funny. After having spent all of middle school on the softball team, Haruna Nagishima decides that this year she would really like to have a boyfriend and become more popular. She bumps into this guy that seems to understand fashion and love, so she asks him to coach her. Fortunately he agrees and their relationship blooms from there. They have challanges and misunderstandings,
...
but they make it through. To many, they may appear to have a typical shoujo relationship, but is actually like that on purpose, which makes it very atypical. Haruna and Yoh both learn how to be romantic through shoujo manga, funny enough. It makes me laugh so hard when Haruna whips out a manga before a date to see how she should act. Every chapter in this series felt important, no pointless-filler pages I should say.
-Art- 9
The artwork is very cute and pleasent to look at. The faces and little chibi characters never fail to make me smile.
-Characters- 10
The manga's high point. The characters in this series are great. There is a good variety and they are all multi-faceted. Some you'll adore , others you will hate (Miyabi Jouhou!). Our main couple is very likable and you will fall in love with them. Haruna is kind-hearted, silly, but can somtimes be a little naive. Yoh can seem a bit harsh, but he's actually super sweet, he's just a bit embarrassed about his feelings.
-Enjoyment- 10
This manga is a super fun, and moderately fast read. There is so much to like about the story as a whole. Really funny, sweet, and well-told.

I've never, ever been a Shoujo Girl. To me, it was all the same; unrealistic, over-the-top and generally ridiculous. But, being a bit of a hopeless romantic, I dip my toes in genre every now and again. I've found a lot of gems, and even more garbage. When searching for something new to watch or read, it is always so great to find something that is EXACTLY what you were looking for. Tonari no Kaibutsu-Kun is everything I've ever wanted from a shoujo manga.
-Story- 10
In the cookie-cutter world of shoujo, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is refreshingly different. The super-nerdy girl and the violent but kind-hearted
...
guy are two characters who would normally just pushed to the side as friends to the main character. But here they get a chance to shine. What I love most about this story is how realistic it feels. You can really understand the main characters and they are much more relatable than the standard shoujo pair. It also deals with deeper emotions like how everybody wants to feel like they belong. Not everybody falls in love on the spot. Sometimes it takes some internal battling and self-revelations to realize what you really want. Change is not only good, but sometimes necessary to make you happy. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun touches on all of these ties them up in a extremely sweet and supremely funny story.
-Art- 9
There is not much to say about the art really. It is very good, but nothing spectacular or ground-breaking. It is clean and pleasant to look at. It has that more realistic look (that I am so very fond of), so no googly eyes that take up 5/6 of the face or vaguely infantile proportions.
-Characters- 10,
All of the characters are pretty likable, even the egotistic, elitist, snobby, rich- boy has his merits. There will always be someone you love/ grow to like. There is also a good variety of character types, so you never feel like all 37 main characters are the same, despite their slightly different hairstyles.
-Enjoyment- 10
Tonari is nothing if not enjoyable. It's a bit addicting to read, I pushed aside my mountain of essays just to keep reading (I regret nothing). I can't understand how you couldn't like it, even if was only a little. The emotions are genuine, and the jokes are actually funny. The characters are very lovable and you will attach to one quickly. The art is great and the pacing is appropriate. What more could you want?
-Overall- 9.5
I would recommend this to anyone who just wants a good story, be you an manga fan or not.

Putting it simply, FLCL is a fast-paced, high-energy, crazy fun thrill ride. It is so easy to get sucked into it and lose out on a productive afternoon (or many, MANY afternoons). FLCL is a great show and is must-watch for any anime-lover.
FLCL's main story is very strange and confusing. It is basically about a boy trying to be mature in a world of immature adults. But what is important to me is how multi-layered it is. You could see it as just a weird coming-of age story, or as a clever, 6 episode metaphor for puberty. There are many characters and all
...
of them have their own story arcs, you just need to look for them. FLCL can be surprisingly sentimental and sweet or it will be absolutely insane and funny.Every time you watch it, you find something new.
The artwork is probably the best looking of the time period. FLCL is now 15 years old, and its artwork is on par with modern anime. It implements dynamic angles and camera movements to suck you in. You really FEEL the characters. Another great point about it's artwork is the fact that the style is constantly changing, to good effect. Every style change sells the tone of the scene and never feels out of place.
This anime is probably most praised for it's fantastic soundtrack. It fits
every scene, every MOMENT so well. Also noteworthy, there is this automatic nostalgic value to punk music, which is absolutely perfect for this coming-of-age story.
The characters in the show are all very different and are generally pretty likable. They range from a lonely girl who can't let go of her ex-boyfriend to a yellow Vespa riding, pinked haired alien hell bent on destroying "Medical Mechanica" and absorbing the power of a space pirate. They are each interesting in their own rights and you will find one that you like.
FLCL is nothing if not enjoyable. Maybe you don't like/understand the story. Maybe you think the characters are annoying. Maybe you hate punk music. I guarantee you will still enjoy FLCL. It has so much diversity in it's characters, story and art style, you would be hard pressed to TRULY hate it as a whole. Maybe in parts, but never as a whole.
It is cool, crazy, funny, action-packed, nostalgic and interesting. There is something for everyone. It offers A LOT of re-watch value, as it has hidden stories and meanings that need a few views to find. Overall, this anime is a winner for me and hopefully many others.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways
This series is where it all began for me. The "Romance Dawn" if you will. I remember starting the fifth grade back in 2007, I hit it off real quickly with this one boy in my class. We had loads of things in common and were constantly sharing new interests. One thing we didn't share was his love anime and manga. This wasn't because I didn't like it, rather I just hadn't experienced it yet. One day he shoved One Piece volumes 1-3 in my backpack and told that I would love it. And love it
...
I did. I read through all 13 novels available at the time in a flash. I read and re-read them while I waited for the next to be released. In me grew a love for manga and anime of all sorts, it was like junk food (I feel like many of you would agree). Incidentally, One Piece was, and still is, my favorite manga of all-time.
But enough about me, on to the actual review! I promise that this will be a completely objective review. I think I will start with what is great about this manga, as it vastly outweighs it's flaws.
The most important part of any story is, well, the story! One piece tells a grand tale of adventuring pirates all searching for the ultimate treasure. In a story like this, the world is absolutely massive, and Eiichiro Oda handles it so well. Every new place our characters travel they are faced with trials and tribulations. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. You never know. Each story arc is unique in setting and character development. There are new problems to solve or maybe another pirate warlord to defeat. Either way it feels pretty fresh every time. And it is all very memorable, I can’t think of a single time I felt that a chapter was just filler-garbage.
At the core of the story is its wonderful characters. All of them have their quirks, but they are not defined by these, which unfortunately happens very often in manga. This makes them feel very real. For example, the main character, Monkey D. Luffy, at face value, seems to be just a lovable idiot. But underneath this is a shocking deep, passionate person who looks out for his friends at all costs. For Luffy there are no truly sad goodbyes, everyone has a purpose and a plan so as their friend, he lets them go. The characters are what I love the most I think, you can connect with them so closely on different levels and they never get boring.
But even with a good plot and characters, what is a story if it is not enjoyable? One Piece is a fun and ofttimes, absolutely insane story. It can leave you in stitches or it will make sob like a baby. It is a well-crafted roller coaster of emotions and plots. No matter how old you are, no matter what kind of manga you like, you WILL enjoy One Piece.
Now to the bad. There is not much about One Piece that is truly bad, but nothing is without flaws. I feel like my points are nitpicky things that don’t really hurt the story.
The artwork in One Piece is normally really great. It is generally clean and simple. But occasionally the fighting scenes can get very messy and it can be a bit difficult to tell what is going on. Also worth noting, there is a lot of visual humor and the mouths especially can get very crazy looking, I can see where this would put some people off. It put me off until I got used to it.
The story can sometimes feel a little repetitive. But I feel this is very understandable, last I heard, this story is meant to take up 100 novels (if you bought the whole series new it would cost you around $1300!) so this inevitable. Although, Oda does a really great job of spacing out the similar story lines, so this is not incredibly noticeable.
Overall, One Piece is a great story and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great series!
Also worth noting: the anime follows the manga series pretty perfectly, so if you are more a watcher than a reader, you will miss out on almost nothing.
