Finding hope and beauty in a dying world - that's the main theme of these two series. In Girls' Last Tour, Chito and Yuuri only have each other, but that's enough to make each day worth living, and in Sunday Without God, Ai embarks on a journey to save the world and helps all her new friends along the way. The world may be ending, but in both series the protagonists have those they care about, and there are still miracles to be found on their journeys.

The protagonists of both series have supernatural powers (in Day Break Illusion, they're magical girls, and in Red Garden, they died and were resurrected) they use to kill human beings that have transformed into monsters. They are also ordered about by a shadowy organization they know little about, and sometimes they try to rebel, and both series explore the emotional toll of their battles. The girls of Day Break Illusion attend a secret school and are guided by adult Elemental Tarot users, but the girls of Red Garden don't have that kind of support as they try to pretend to lead normal lives while killing monsters by night. The art styles may be drastically different, but both are dark and violent series about girls doing whatever it takes to survive.

The main focus of these two series is finding happiness in a dying world. Heroines Ai and Kanata are both cheerful and optimistic, and also a little naive, and through their curiosity we learn more about their worlds. In both, no one really knows what exactly happened to the world, but the "how" doesn't matter - what matters is how humanity adapts and how Ai and Kanata mature. Sunday Without God is focused on travel while Sound of the Sky takes place within a single city, but in both Ai and Kanata meet new people and see the different ways others are going about their lives. Ai dreams of saving the world while Kanata's dream of becoming a bugler is far simpler, and even when things seem bleak, they try their best to help and remain hopeful. Melancholy, bittersweet, yet also beautiful - through their optimism Ai and Kanata bring hope to a post-apocalyptic setting.
