Consider the following before reading this review or watching the anime:
- This is an original anime series. Not based in anything like manga or light novel or game, so it didn't pass through the popularity filter before getting green lit for animation.
Taking that into account, I got to say that this is a very good anime series. It is quite hard for original series to have a good plot and good pace. At first it seemed like the usual isekai, only to have one revelation show up and throw everything you had accepted so far out of the window. It's up to the viewer to
...
see through the hole that has been opened before your eyes. If you peek, you might enjoy what you see.
Plot wise, it was quite predictable after a certain episode mid point through the series but don't let this drive you away from it. It is quite enjoyable. It had many original elements in it, or usual elements applied quite creatively.
There were some characters introduced in the first episode that I thought were gonna play a larger role in the series, but it wasn't. While their lack of screen time didn't affect my score for this series, it left me wondering how much potential this series might had if they were given more participation.
Many questions has been left unanswered, but the studio had limited budget and time. Considering this was an original series probably made just to show off the capabilities of the studio (it is fairly new), those questions will be left unanswered for eternity with no second season or sequel planned.
So... story wise, it was very good. Not your usual adventure series and had many plot twist that made it quite intriguing. Still, left me with many questions that might never be answered, so I give it an 8.
Art: it is quite good. Drawings might not be everyone's favorite but they were acceptable to me. Nothing outstanding but not bad either. Animation was quite good too. Landscapes were beautiful many times. And the 3DCG was quite good. They really wanted to show off their 3DCG and I'm quite sure Production Committees will consider this studio for their projects.
Sound: nothing outstanding but not bad either. Opening and Ending theme were very enjoyable. The opening is one of my favorites if not the 1st place. Gets you hyped up for an adventure.
Characters: well, some of them didn't get proper development or enough screen time, others had plenty of story to be told, but given time and budget constraints, they might never get their background explained. Otherwise, they were quite good. I found Natsume relatable at times, especially at a certain episode (and you might identify it immediately as soon as you get there).
Enjoyment: Very good, very good. As I have said before, the plot was predictable after episode 5 or 6, but I didn't know it was going to unfold in some unexpected ways. Actually It surprised me how it was actually executed. It exploited many things in a good way and gave me entertainment no other original anime series gave me in recent times. And I have just realized, there aren't that many original anime series that made me truly enjoy them.
Overall, Deca-Dence is very good. Wish it had 13 episodes instead of 12 to explain some bits (no pun intended) or expand the lore a bit more but other than that, You might enjoy it. Give it a try and don't drop it, at least until you get past episode 4.

In case you ask, I watched this series only because of that particular scene of the princess getting applied a german suplex getting shown in memes here and there.
Story, had some potential, if this was a multiple season series, I could understand the 12 episode storyline. They had to setup the world building first and then settle down for a showdown between the main protagonist and sort of main antagonist to give a conclusion to the initial plot-drive.
While there were some plot that were not explored at all, I hope it gets explored further if a new season gets green-lit.
Art was great. Character drawings were
...
very good through the entire season. Animation wise, while there were plenty of static shots at some point, something I truly hate in anime, the fight scenes had some smooth animation. One scene in particular got me surprised for the good animation and it wasn't technically a fight scene. Genzo picked up a happy walking Carmilla and applied a hold and it looked smooth af. When you see it, you will appreciate the animation.
Females in this series were quite beautiful and lovely too. You might appreciate how good the characters look.
I would say, this series served as a good showdown of what the studio is capable regarding character animation.
Sound wise, nothing outstanding. Just good. The OP is quite energetic a good match to the series.
Characters... well, at some point a felt the characters were quite repetitive but that's part of the series. The only true development I saw in the series was in Carmilla and it was just for a short period of time. The rest stayed the same pretty much. Nothing outstanding but it was fun. I enjoyed the show pretty much because of the females, they were cute and beautiful.
Enjoyment... did I enjoy it? Yes! But I consider this series just a good way to kill time. Not necessarily a show to invest yourself in, to savoir the plot, think about it or get your own conclusions. It was fine I guess... It is simply not meant to be taken seriously.
So, overall? Was quite good. Did I say already that the females were cute and beautiful? Most of the fan service is delivered in a weird way, but you don't watch this show for the fan service. You watch it just to kill some time and have a chuckle here and there while enjoying one or two good fight scenes. The rest is pretty much repetitive. Is it a bad thing? Well, only if you were expecting something serious. But if you got some spare time, you might enjoy this if you accept that this series is not expecting to be outstanding.

WARNING. If you can ignore the poor animation and drawing quality, maybe you can watch it entirely and you will find it quite enjoyable. If animation can put you off quite easily, you might drop this.
Alright, I gave art a 2, dreadful. At times it was laughable. Considering it was a NETFLIX ORIGINAL, I thought it would have superb quality, but nope. Don't know if at times they employed rotoscoping, but if it was, I have seen better examples of it. This was quite poor. At times the proportions of hands, were way off. Like, REALLY off.
Story wise, I give at and 8. It reminded
...
me of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (no pun intended). But this takes the premise to another whole level. This show left me many times in total awe. It truly was shocking in plenty of moments... but there were some times when I was like, why the F did that happen? (i.e., something at the end of the first episode) only to be left without any explanation whatsoever. Despite that, the whole story tackles many social issues within Japan and perhaps the World itself. It really left me thinking a lot. Especially at the end. It left me with an existential questionnaire, and that is really good thing.
Character development was on point. During disasters, the dark side of people floats after some time, and those that are weak, show some development as the series progresses. The series tackled how people might cope with depression, sadness, fear and despair in the middle of a disaster or after it.
The only reason I didn't give it a higher score despite all the shocking moments and the message delivered was the middle point of the series. At times I felt it dragged quite a bit. I started forward skipping many times and even after I forward skipped that much, I felt I didn't miss quite a bit after that mini arc was done. After completing the series, I realized it was truly unnecessary and could have been a 9-episode series. Maybe they could have increased the quality of the series by shorting that middle arc a little bit more.
About soundtrack/sound, the beginning was truly terrifying. The soundtrack made it even more exciting. Nothing outstanding, but it truly helped the series.
Now, did I enjoy it? I would say, yes... but the animation quality was quite distracting. That's why I gave it a 6 in enjoyment.
Overall, I give it a 7, more likely due to the strong message the creators are trying to send to the world. Yes, while Japan is the main scenario, this series conveys a message to the entire world. Cherish the land we have and the life that our parents gave to us, because maybe, tomorrow it might be different...

Only the enjoyment that I have experienced with this series wants me to give this a 10 to all story, art, sound, character, enjoyment and overall score, but I have to try to keep it real as much as I can... Still it is a solid 9 for me and my favorite series from spring season.
I would compare this to Gintama, but more focused on school life and adolescent love life. Without giving you readers too many spoilers, this series isn't about the story progression but rather enjoying the small bits little by little. You get few new things here and there, maybe a flashback
...
here and there, maybe doing some circles here and there... but for some reason the enjoyment never ends. It always makes me smile.
This series isn't made for those people wishing to be done with this within 12 or 24 episodes. As I have said before, this is something like Gintama, you get to smile episode after episode if you embrace it for what it is.
I got to say, I prefer short series, those where you get a resolution within 12 or 24 episodes. I have tried to avoid kilometric series those that span for 200, 300, 900... especially if they don't show progress... but for some reason I have enjoyed Kaguya-sama A LOT. It teases you with some progress, but you have to identify it properly. Once you notice the actual progress, then it makes the show wholesome.
It reminded me of school life a little bit, when I had a crush on someone. Perhaps because I was shy we didn't end up together until after some time passed by, but we cherished our time together, even when we weren't a couple. Kaguya-sama is something similar. When you see some bits from the past being thrown as reference in the present, that's when you realize there has been some actual progress.
Fortunately, you don't need to know a lot about in-culture jokes from Japan, the show explains some of it to the viewers, or many of the jokes are quite universal, which makes it easier for the viewer to get the comedy in it, but some jokes require some understanding of the japanese culture... for example, the seriousness of calling someone for their given name, but this series plays around with that in a funny way. But you will get all of them which is a blessing for overseas fans.
In the end, give it a try, you might like it, but don't hate it if it doesn't show any apparent progress. It is a slice of life after all.

This review is valid as of Episode 10 airing.
First thing first, don't trust MAL rating anymore. Chihayafuru 3 (anime third season) has been struck by people downvoting it for childish reasons. So from now on, don't trust MAL rating until they fix their issues (which they haven't as of December 13th). MAL admins and moderators, your site credibility is in jeopardy.
Second, before you watch this, watch the first and second season. No need to read the manga (I'm not a very active manga reader to be honest). But you know this series is quite popular if it has its own trilogy of live action movies.
...
A TRILOGY!
Third, this series pace has been a lot more quick in my opinion. Everything is happening faster, but it is not because the series is being rushed. Nope, in the contrary, everything is getting better and exciting! Long time rivals are finally going to meet their opponents, our protagonists are finally finding their resolutions and they're doing their best to stick to them. The plot has always been moving forward, but aw man, this is getting intense.
Soundtrack wise, plenty of OST are being reused but both OP and ED for this season are quite great. I will be honest, I usually skipped the first and second season OP, but the third season OP music and animation are sooo good I don't skip them anymore. The OP money shot is the slow-mo shot of Chihaya of course, you will know it when you watch it.
Now, about the animation, well. It's been YEARS since the second season was released, and I haven't seen a huge improvement in animation in all these years, so no big improvement, but it was already good back then and it continues to be really good even now. If they featured more slow-mo shots like the one in the opening, it would receive more praise for sure and I have seen plenty of scenarios where that would have played quite nicely for the storytelling.
So far, I have been enjoying this season a lot. It didn't really help that on the first couple of weeks there were two episodes being released per week, so now that we're back to one episode per week I feel more eager to watch the next episode more than ever before!
Will update this as necessary to reflect my thoughts about the series.

Writing this after watching episode 8.
Story wise, it's fairly average. There is a good organization and an evil organization fighting against each other. Good organization doesn't know how to track evil organization so they're trying to get them after the evil organization acts. So far it is okayish. The good organization uses school girls, and the reason seems quite plausible... The main issue I have with the story is that pretty much each episode ends with a short struggle ending quite well instead of leaving us waiting for more. It's like, okay, evil organization has failed today to take over the world, so let's wait
...
until tomorrow! See ya! While sometimes they have explained how characters get information around the evil organization steps, there isn't something truly convincing about how they move forward with the story. So for now it has been a hit-and-run type story.
Now onto art and characters. Character design is the usual moe/cute you see with some school girl anime doing cute things so it is not outstanding on its own. The animation on the other hand is really good. In a day where animation studios relies more and more on CG, it's quite impressive to find an anime featuring cute school girls doing cute-spy things with really well drawn animation sequences during fights. CG usage can be spotted, but it is mainly on mechanical things, while the characters are all well drawn.
The characters establish very clearly the sempai-kouhai relationship during the series. They're more on the cute/moe side of the scale but they also do some real fighting, so it is nice to watch cute girls kicking some ass. During the series we can see some character development which is really nice, but there is nothing reeaaaaally outstanding. So simply expect good fights and some sempai-kouhai love.
As to the sound, the soundtrack is HOT. I really like it. The OP is catchy and the ED is nice. The selection of BGM is really cool for the setting of the series. Too bad they didn't release the soundtrack while the series is going on.
I usually watch series that really catches my attention through the season, and I also watch other series just for fun. Release the Spyce falls into the second category. It is nothing outstanding (aside from the catchy tunes used as BGM), but it is something I enjoy watching. I don't feel like it is a waste of time, I will watch it 'til the end.

Review until episode 10.
Animation/Art details has been dropping a lot to awful levels lately. Not even just frame skip. Proportion, Perspective and Quality has dropped massively that it is very noticeable. I see serious issues with the production of this series, especially due to the fact that we got 2 episode recaps already. Something really wrong is going on.
I simply wanted episode 10 to end up quickly. The animation is taking away the enjoyment from the series... wishing Kyoto Animation still made this...
This is very sad as we have waited lots of years for the next part. The start of the series was really good,
...
it got me hooked into the series immediately. Episode after episode, it got me wishing for more. Way more than TSR (and that was a nice arc)
The series had a nice story. So far we had Mithril counterattack the enemies and they have come to the rescue most of the time and they succeeded, but IV is different in the sense that Mithril is now in need for rescue, and there is no one able to provide backup. So it is up to Mithril remnants to rise from the ashes take flight once again.
Will see how it goes from episode 10. But so far, if I had to buy the Blu-ray series, this massive drop in quality and the production issues are making me doubt if it will be good to buy any goods.
