Philosophical pieces; Both deal with the meaning of humanity, in FMA through the idea of a soul trapped in a suit of armor, and in ES with clones. Both main characters wander through a world that is corrupt and filled with layered characters, and romances that are not based on romance, but mutual respect and partnership. The manga may not seem to connect on the surface, but I have found that the moral decisions that the characters grapple with are similar despite the context.

Gorgeous Victorian costumes, romance and blond bishonen are in both series.Yousei has supernatural elements where as Emma does not, but both heroines do not immediately give themselves up to the guy and are refreshingly not whiny.

Both of these manga deal with human emotion, stealing, lying, cheating and a competition. Battle Royale is more violent but the characters of Nao and Shuya are very similar. They both are kind idealists thrown into a game where they are expected to device and play only for themselves, but find smart companions who help them out.
