a short review containing spoilers and some random thoughts:
now, YYH has an amazing and funny dub, a good character ensemble, nice visuals and a good OP. it has that togashi touch where we get introduced to storylines and characters that are morally grey. it is however obvious that YYH was supposed to be, what can i say, a bit more. it is obvious that togashi meant for the last arc to have been a great, political demon world arc as an exciting and full way to conclude the series - or a three way war between demon world, spirit world and the human world, instead
...
of a tournament arc where the ending is a bit too ideal and optimistic in the world we got introduced to: a world where morally grey characters are common and rules are not always followed(demons are suddenly going to respect rules because of a new political system?) - especially when the plot point about koenmas dad manipulating demons to do crimes was brushed over. i say this with respect for togashi and his health and understand why the last arc was not fleshed out, however this is what keeps YYH for being a 10/10 for me.
YYH is still a classic, its still a blueprint of the shounen genre, and character arcs still get wrapped up nicely where the main characters find peace in their inner turmoil: yusuke comes to term with his half-demon and half-human identity, hiei finds a place/person to belong to and kurama accepts his desires and feelings by leaving his past persona behind. i do wish that kuwabara had somewhat of a personal struggle/goal - but it can be said that kuwabara had already proven his worth and strength in the chapter black arc, when it was earlier thought that he was inferior compared to others in the group, so i cant criticize his development - if that three way war between demon world, spirit world and the human world actually happened, i could see how kuwabara could have went through an amazing character arc, with him being a human who possesses strong spiritual powers, yet has demon friends.
now, heres the third thing, which i generally find is a typical but annoying trope in shounen anime - sometimes, what happens in the anime is a bit too idealistic, like genkai and the child gamemaster coming back to life. there is a lot of plot armor, such as yusuke having demon heritage - i feel as if the story would have been richer if yusuke was just an ''ordinary'' human, who happened to become a great spirit detective. i know raizen was meant to be seen as a father figure for yusuke, but that sentiment was not executed well and felt kind of random. some anime exclusive stuff was good, like the fight between hiei and makuro, koenma with his ogre assistant and shizuru and sakyo.
all in all, i think this is a good anime to watch if youre a fan of togashi and the usual topics he comes across in his works: friendship, humanity, war and the moral greyness of it all with great character ensembles and power systems.
i also found a great site for everyone who wants to know the details of the differences between the manga and the anime:
